Course Title: Computer Network Lab
Course Code: CSE 320

Report Number:01

Report Name: Straight Through and Crossover

Objective:
1. Straight through Cable
2. Cross-Over Cable

Necessary Tools, Hardware and Software:

• Tools: Modular plug crimper, cable tester.
• Hardware: UTP cables , RJ-45 connectors.
• Wirers.
• No Software Needed.

Background:
Straight-Through Cable:
Straight-through cables connect different devices in a network that serve different purposes
and still observe wiring standards consisting of T568A or T568B, where transmitting pins
on one side are connected to receiving pins on the other end. They are commonly used for
attaching computers to switches or modems to routers.

Crossover Cable:

A crossover cable provides a direct link between two similar devices without necessarily
requiring a hub or a router. This means that Wire pairs at one end are differently terminated
from the ones at the other end among others, its transmission pin at one point is linked with
the receiving pin of another device, facilitating direct data transfer between such relevant
equipment. It is essential in making connections between like network devices; for example
computers and switches in point-to-point mode.

Steps:
1. cut about 1.5 cm from the cable shielding at both ends. This task can be completed using a
crimping tool that has an area which is round.

2. Next we will need to separate the wires; there should be four twisted pairs refering from
the above picture is better to arrange them in top-to bottom way. One end should be
arranged in A position and the other one is B.
3. As soon as the order is right, clump them together in a line and if there are any that project
more than others snip them back to make an even level. The hard part is putting these into
the RJ45 plug without disrupting their order.

4.Then press the cable inside. This notch at the end of a plug should be slightly more than
above where cable shielding for such an occurrence means,
5.
Push the crimping tool into it once the wires sit comfortably inside. It should be properly
formed

6. To ensure that we have terminated each end of the cable correctly, let’s test it using a cable
tester and apply four or more Ohms per pin.

Remarks:
Throughout this experiment, we were focused on teaching the students how to connect RJ45
connectors to both Cat 5 and Cat 6 UTP cables.
This was a very detailed task because it required one to take note of the type of cable being used
as well as following precise requirements.

For good signal integrity, emphasis was laid upon proper handling of cables which includes
untwisting and aligning wire pairs.

Each cutter must be carefully used lest it damages any conductors.

To avoid a wrong termination, it is important for one to insure that the wires have been oriented
properly and their sequence is right before crimping them.

Constant pressure applied during the process of crimping assures secure and dependable
connections.
