CHAPTER ONE

1.1 INTRODUCTION

In some years back in the Nigeria polytechnic, national

diploma science students use to go for four month industrial

training after the first year in the polytechnic, to let them

know more about what they have been done in the school,

science students they need to practicalized their work s to

make them perfect in t he area of their specialization, it is

organized by industrial training funds( ITF)

1.2 DEFINITION OF SIWES

Student industrial working experience scheme (Siwes)

is a program organized by industrial training fund (ITF) for

National Diploma science student after their first year ITF)

for National Diploma science student after their first year

on campus , to help them known more about h e practical

aspect of what they have been thought in th e school, thou

will do practical in the school but we still have some area

where we have to know, that it will help us in future to be

1
able to call ourself a computer operator , programmer a

system analyst.

1.3 AIMS AND OBJECTIVE OF SIWES

i. It promotes interaction between student in training

and the company staffs.

ii. It helps us to gain moiré to what to customer.

iii. It help us to know how to relate to customer

iv. It help us to be perfect in our course of study

v. It help us to know how the computer system is been

operate

vi. It help us to know more about practical aspect of

what we have being taught in the school

2
CHAPTER TWO

2.1 OPERATING SYSTEM

An operating system (OS) is a set of program that

manage computer hardware resources and provide common

services for application software. The operating system is a

vital component of the sys tem software in a computer

system. Application program require an operating system

which are usually separate programs but can be combined

in simple system. For hardweare function such as input and

output and memory allocation, the operating system acts as

an intermediary between application program and the

computer hardware. There are different example of

operating system such as : Unix operating system ,

Microsoft, disk operating system ( MS-DOS) windows

operating system etc.

2.2 FUNCTION OF OPERATING SYSTEM

Some of the function includes.

i. It communicate to the compute r user ( operator )

through computer console.

3
ii. Transferring of data and loading of program from

the disk into a main memory.

iii. It allow sharing of resources such as file

iv. It is used to detects and report errors arising from

the pheripheral to the main processor.

v. It is used to performed different operation on

computer system.

2.3 TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEM

Operating system (OS) are categorized into different

type but only 2 types of operating system will be discussed

i. SINGLE – USER OS: This is a types of operating

system that allow only one user to have access to a

computer system at a time example include MS-

DOS. PC-DOS etc.

ii. MULTI-USER OS : In other hand , this is an opposite of

single – use by which it allow many different user to

have access to a computer system at a time.

Example include UNIX operating sys tem , window

operating system etc.

4
2.4 DIFFERENT AND SIMILARITIES BETWEEN

WINDOWS OS AND MS-DOS

There are different examples of operating system but

the common among them is window operating system and

Microsoft disk operating system.

2.4.1 DIFFERENT

MS-DOS WINDOW OS
DOS use CLI (command line) Window used GUL (graphical)
Interface Use interface
Dos does not supported Window support networking
networking
Dos is a single – user Window is a multi-user
operating system operating system
Dos is a single tasking Window is a multi tasking
Server 0r administration is Sever administration is
not possible possible

2.4.3 SIMILARITIES

1. Both are personal computer ( PC) operating system

2. Both are product from Microsoft corporation

3. both can copy a file

5
CHAPTER THREE

3.1 INTRODUTION TO COMPUTER NETWORKING

In the world of computer, computer networking, is the

practice of linking two or more computer devices together

for the purpose of sharing data. network are built with a mix

of computer hardware and computer software. In

networking , the communication languages used by

computer devices is called protocol. Another way of classify

computer network is by s et of protocol , they support. The

popular protocol included, TCP ( Transmission control

protocol) and IP ( internet protocol), they are the most

common protocol fond on the internet and in how network.

3.2 ADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER NETWORKS

i. It allow user to have direct access to there file from

different computer within the networks

ii. It allow sharing of resources within the network place

by computer, the resources are : printer, scanner etc.

iii. There is security provide by the network to secure

the program such as password.

6
3.3 DISADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER NETWORKS

1. It expensive to install, the cost of installation is high

because software, cable and other item is expensive to

by

2. The server may get fault or tail and there will be lost of

some program and file.

3.4 TYPES OF COMPUTER NETWORKS

There are three main types of computer networks

i. LOCAL AREA NETWORK: This is a type of network

that serves user within a geographical area. This

kind of network is been used by few users in a

small area such as school, office building etc.

ii. METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK (MAN) : This is a

network which cover a large geograp;hical area

such as cities. This types of network combined two

o9r m ore LANS together but limited to a specific

geographical area.

iii. WIDE AREA NETWORK ( WAN): This is a types of

network that used to connect and istribute

7
network to two or more geographical area which

make used of a local telephone line or other

wireless devices. The purpose of WAN is to

provide reliable, task and safe communication

between two more places.

3.5 NETWORK TOPOLOGY

A network topology describe arrangement of system

on a computer networks, it describe how the computr, or

node, within the net works are arranged and connected to

each other some common nfetworkds topologies are defined

below.

i. STAR TOPOLOG: A star topology is designed with each

node connected directly to the hub a concentrator. The

hub or concentrator serve as backbow to all th e device

connect to it. The advantages is that it is easy to add

and remove a computer system without disturb the

networks.

iii. RING TOPOLOGY : Ring topology refers to atopology

that allow data pass in one direction and teach node

8
are connected with each other forming a ring or

circle. The message shows around the ring in one

direction.

iv. BUS TOPOLOGY : Bus topology deal with connecting

each node to a central bus that run along the entire

networks. It required a least amount of cable to

connect the computer. It is simple and reliable and

easy to understand. The disadvantages is that is

that it difficult to troubleshoot.

v. TREE TOPOLOGY : A tree topology is the

combination of the characteristic of star topology

and bus toploy. The star configured workstation is

connected to the bus topology backbone cable. Tree

topology supported by several hardware and

software, but if the backbone cable break, the

network will goes down.

9
CHAPTER FOUR

INTRODUCTION TO INTERNET

4.1 DEFINITION

Internet can be defined as the global information

system that provides users or maker accessible to the

general public. ;the interconnected computer work s by

transmitting data through special types of packet switching

which is known as the internet protocol (IP) . The network

enable the internet to be used for various important

function which include the several means of communication

like file transfer, the online chat and even sharing of

document.

4.2 BENEFIT OF INTERNET

i. It distributes information to the public about a

particular organization product and services.

ii. It provide facility to read book of different

nature online, many books are published on the web,

including social science books, computer science books etc.

10
iii. Internet allow to chatting between two people

by sending and received message instantly

iv. Through internet connection people can also

watch live television broadcast and listing to radio.

v. Through internet people can also get software

by downloading it on your own computer to used.

11
CHAPTER FIVE

5.1.1 CONCLUSION

5.1.2 PERSONAL AFFAIRS ON A SIWES

I than God for make it possible for me to participate in

the industrial training before I am a computer illiterate , but

now SIWES and turn me to be come a computer literate.

It is good to go for four m on the industrial training as a

science student; a lot of experience will be acquired. A

science student without a knowledge of practical, he/she is a

figure headed science student, try to go for Siwes , it help

a lot .

5.1.2.1 SUGGESTION TO POLYTECHNIC

I suggested that polytechnic should make Siwes

compulsory for every science and technology student so

that it will make them perfect in practical aspect in their

study.
