Ava Max
Her real name is Amanda Kociová. She is an American pop singer and composer.
Amanda Ava Koci was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on 16th February 1994. Her parents are from
Albania; her father Paul is from Qepara and her mother Andrea is from Sarandë. Ava also has an
older brother. In 1991, her parents fled from Albania after the fall of communism in the country and
lived for a year in a Red Cross-supported church in Paris. In Paris, they met a woman from Wisconsin
and before emigrating to the United States they got passports to stay in the state where Ava was
born. Her mother was a classically trained opera singer, while her father was a pianist.
Ava moved with her family to Virginia when she was 8 years old, where she grew up in Hampton
Roads. During her life in Virginia, she competed in many singing competitions. She traveled
frequently to Florida to perform in singing competitions, and began releasing music under the
nickname Amanda Kay. At the age of 13, she came up with the middle name Ava and adopted it as
her first name after stating that she did not like being called Amanda as a teenager.
When she was 14 years old, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career at her mother's
suggestion, but she was constantly rejected because she was a minor. A year later, she moved to
South Carolina, where she began writing songs about the relationships she observed. When she was
17, she returned to Los Angeles with her brother, who acted as her manager.
In 2014, she met Canadian music producer Cirkut. Ava sang him Happy Birthday, which led to
working together and writing a lot of songs. In July 2016, they released Anyone but You on
SoundCloud. The song gained momentum and caught the attention of various record labels who
contacted her, eventually leading her to sign a record contract with Atlantic Records in 2016.
After signing the deal, she began searching for a last name to use as her stage name. She decided for
Max.
In August 2018, she released the song Sweet but Psycho. This song became her biggest hit after
peaking at number one in 22 countries, including the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden,
Norway and New Zealand. The song also peaked at number 2 in Australia and number 10 on the US
Billboard Hot 100. Ava released her first album Heaven & Hell in 2020. The song Kings & Queens
peaked at number 19 on the UK Singles Chart and number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song My
Head & My Heart peaked at number 45 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 18 on the UK chart.
