b) (1+x)2
about x = 1.

c) cos(2x) about x = π3 .

2. By approximately how much does the area of a square increases if its

side length increases from 10cm to 10.4cm?

3. In the following, i) use a suitable linearization to approximate the in-

dicated value. ii) Determine the sign of the error and estimate its size.
iii) Use the information in i) and ii) to specify an interval you can be
sure contain the value.

a) 50

b) 2.003

c) cos 46◦

d) sin 33◦

4. Find the indicated Taylor polynomials

a) x about x = 4, order 3.

b) 2+x
about x = 1, order n.

5. Find the Maclaurin polynomial Pn (x) for

a) f (x) = x3 .

b) ln(1 + x).

6. In the following, show that the equation has exactly one solution on
the given interval.

a) x4 + 3x + 1 = 0, [−2, −1].

b) 2x3 − 3x2 − 12x − 6 = 0, [−1, 0].

7. In the following, use the Mean Value Theorem to find c.

a) f (x) = x2 + 2x − 1, a = 0, b = 1.

b) f (x) = x + x1 , a = 12 , b = 2.

8. Use the Mean Value Theorem to show that | sin b − sin a| ≤ |b − a|.
