Assignment 1

This document outlines Assignment 1 for CE 1222 Structural Mechanics I, issued on 17/10/2023 and due on 27/10/2023. It includes four questions related to beam mechanics, including calculations for bending moments, shear-force diagrams, centroid distances, and allowable bending moments for a hollow box beam. Submission is required in hard copy to the instructor's office.

CE 1222 Structural Mechanics I

Assignment 1 – Intake 40

Issued Date- 17/10/2023

Submission Date – 27/10/2023 at 4.00pm

Submission Mode - Hard copies to instructor’s office

Q1) The beam ABCD shown in the figure has overhangs at each end and carries a uniform load of
intensity q. For what ratio b/L will the bending moment at the midpoint of the beam be zero?

(Prob. 4.3-7, Gere & Goodno,7e)

Q2) The shear-force diagram for a simple beam is shown in the figure.

Determine the loading on the beam and draw the bending-moment diagram, assuming that no couples
act as loads on the beam.

Q3) Determine yt (distance from centroid to extreme top fibre), yb (distance from centroid to
extreme bottom fibre) and Ix (second moment of area about x-axis) for each of the areas shown in Fig.
Q3. (x is a centroidal axis).

Q4) A hollow box beam is constructed with webs of Douglas-fir plywood and flanges of pine, as shown
in the figure Q4 in a cross-sectional view. The plywood is 24 mm thick and 300 mm wide; the flanges
are 50mm x 100mm (actual size).

The modulus of elasticity for the plywood is 11 GPa and for the pine is 8 GPa.

(a) If the allowable stresses are 14 MPa for the plywood and 12 MPa for the pine, find the allowable
bending moment Mmax when the beam is bent about the z axis.

(b) Repeat part (a) if the beam is now bent about its y axis. (Prob. 6.2-3 of Gere & Goodno,)
