BENG 2143

ENGINEERING STATISTICS
ASSIGNMENT
SEMESTER II SESSION 2020/2021

INSTRUCTIONS:
• This assignment should be done in a group of 3 to 5 students. Please appoint a group
leader in your group.
• Answer all questions using either Microsoft Excel or any statistical software of
your choice. Please attach the print screen of your Excel/software output. Calculations
by hand or scientific calculators will not be accepted.
• Plagiarism is strictly prohibited and will be penalised.
• Your report should have a cover page (stating the particulars of your group members,
course, section and lecturer’s name)
• Submit your assignment by 18th June 2021, at 5pm.
QUESTION 1

Please read the following instructions carefully:

• Each group will design and implement a mini project that involves collecting,
analyzing, and reporting data.
• Collect raw data with sample size 30 ≤ 𝑛 ≤ 50. Your raw data should include at least
one qualitative and one quantitative variable.
• You may either conduct a survey to generate original primary data (for example, you
may want to collect data on the CGPA (quantitative variable) and gender (qualitative
variable) of your classmates); or to collect data from a published source (for example
journal, newspaper, magazine, online data, etc.).
• Any data collected from published sources must be properly referenced. Please
provide the title resource, publisher, year of publication and type of resource.
• You must attach all questionnaires that have been answered by your respondents in
order to ensure the originality of your data.
• Your data should be typed/written clearly on your report.
• You should choose a topic that interests you. The substance of the topic is less important
than how you execute the project but it is important to make sure that the topic is not
identical to another group.

I. Select a qualitative data from your project, from your qualitative data:

(a) Construct a pie chart.

(b) Construct a bar graph.
(c) Based on the diagrams above, interpret your findings in at least 6 sentences.

II. Select a quantitative data from your project. From your quantitative raw data:

(a) Describe the center of your data set. Based on the measures of central tendency
conducted on your raw data, describe the shape of your data set.
(b) Describe the spread/dispersion of your raw data set.
(c) Do your data contain any outlier?
(d) How do outliers affect the central tendency and dispersion?
(e) Make a frequency table for your data set. State clearly the class intervals and
boundaries you are using.
(f) Based on the frequency table above, construct a histogram and a relative
frequency polygon.
(g) Construct an ogive for your data set. From your ogive, find the median, first
quartile and the third quartile.
(h) Calculate the variance and standard deviation for your grouped data set.
(i) Briefly give your own comments (in minimum 6 sentences) to summarize your
data based on any calculations or any diagrams that you have done above.
(j) Identify ONE (1) example of the application of statistics in the field of
engineering. The description should include the background of the application,
the variables involved and a sample/example of the application.
Note: Any reference made from published sources must be properly referenced.
Please provide the title of the resource, publisher, year of publication and type
of resource.

QUESTION 2

Wauchope and McDowell (1984) studied the effect of the amount of extractable iron, the
amount of extractable aluminium and the pH of soils' adsorption of phosphate to the adsorption
index. Table below gives the data:

Extractable Iron Extractable pH Adsorption Index

Aluminium
61 13 7.7 4
175 21 7.7 18
111 24 6.8 14
124 23 7.3 18
130 64 5.1 26
173 38 5.7 26
169 33 5.8 21
169 61 5.2 30
160 39 6.3 28
244 71 5.7 36
257 112 4.4 65
333 88 4.5 62
199 54 6.2 40

(a) Fit a multiple regression model for predicting adsorption index using the amount of
extractable iron, the amount of extractable aluminium and the pH of soils' adsorption
of phosphate by using EXCEL/SPSS.
(b) Perform the model utility test by using 0.05 significance level.
(c) Interpret the values of R2 given in the output.
(d) Determine whether the amount of extractable iron contributes significantly to the
regression after effects of the amount of extractable aluminium and effects of the pH
of soils' adsorption of phosphate are taken into account.
