b. As the reaction proceeds, the rate decreases. Suggest a reason for this.
In a reaction, the average rate was calculated to be 0.05 gs-1. If the rate was calculated
6 over a time period of 30 seconds, what was the mass lost during those 30 seconds?
Hint: rearrange the equation for average rate to find the change in quantity (Δq).
A general graph for quantity of product formed over the course of a reaction
7 might look like this:
Add a curve to the graph to show the results that would be expected if the experiment
was carried out again using the same volume of a lower concentration of reactant.
Hint: The line would be steeper at the start of the reaction if it goes faster, or shallower if
it goes more slowly.

∆q = 30 × 0.05

7 The gradient of the added curve should be shallower and should plateau at the same height as the original curve.
As the particle size increases, the time taken for the reaction to end decreases.
OR
8 As the particle size decreases, the time taken for the mass to decrease by 0.5 g increases.
Extended answer: By decreasing the particle size of a reactant, we increase its surface area. The higher the surface
area, the higher the chance of collisions and the faster the rate of reaction. So in summary, the smaller the particle
size the faster the rate of reaction.
