Ex 7k q3 Solution

The document presents a mathematical problem involving the relationship between height (h) and width (x) of a structure, leading to a volume equation V(x) = x^2(160 - 2x). It establishes the constraints for x, which must be between 0 and 80, and solves for x when V equals 50000, finding valid solutions at x = 20.5 and x = 75.6 while rejecting an invalid solution. The analysis includes both graphical and algebraic methods to determine the intersection points for the volume equation.

Question 3

a.
ℎ + 2𝑥 = 160
ℎ = 160 − 2𝑥
b. We require: 𝑥 > 0 and ℎ > 0
𝑥 > 0 𝑎𝑛𝑑 160 − 2𝑥 > 0
𝑥 > 0 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 < 80
If we combine these: 0 < 𝑥 < 80
c. 𝑉 = 𝑥 2 ℎ
But ℎ = 160 − 2𝑥
𝑉 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 (160 − 2𝑥) where 𝑥 ∈ (0,80)

d. To find the values of x for which 𝑉 = 50000 we can either

solve:
50000 = 𝑥 2 (160 − 2𝑥) or we can use the graph and draw in
the line 𝑦 = 50000
Using MENU Analyse Graph Intersection, we find the two
intersection point at (20.5, 50000) and (75.6, 500000).
Therefore, 𝑥 = 20.5, 75.6

Alternatively, using the solve command on the calculator

screen:

We get: 𝑥 = −16.13, 20.50, 75.63 but must reject 𝑥 = −16.13 as it is outside the
domain.
