Test 2 2022 Mat Sci

The document outlines a test on an aluminium alloy and a steel rod, including questions on tensile testing, modulus of elasticity, and plastic deformation. It covers calculations for stress, strain, yield strength, and elongation, as well as discussions on grain structure and fracture mechanics. The test consists of five questions, each with specific tasks related to material science principles.

Material Science 3 with Corrosion

Test 2 Chapters 6,7 and 8

Question 1 (20 marks)

An aluminium alloy specimen of 3mm diameter with 50 mm gage length was tested to destruction in a
tensile test. The results are given in Table 1. The final length between the gauge merks was 53.2mm.

Table 1

Load (N) Extension (mm)

1000 0.06
2000 0.180
3000 0.290
4000 0.402
5000 0.504
6000 0.697
7000 0.900
7500 1.297
8000 2.204
7150 (fracture) 3.200

a. Plot an engineering stress versus engineering strain curve. [8]

b. Determine the modulus of elasticity of the alloy [6]
c. Determine the tensile strength of the alloy [2]
d. Determine the 0.2% offset yield strength of the alloy [2]
e. Determine the percentage elongation at fracture. [2]

Question 2 (20 marks)

A steel rod of dimensions 16.2 mm diameter and of length 25 cm is subjected to a tensile force of 50000
N. The modulus of elasticity is 210 GPa, and Poisson’s ratio is 0.293.

Determine

a. The amount that the specimen will elongate in the direction of the applied force [10]
b. The change in diameter of the rod. [10]

Question 3 (20 marks)

a. Explain the differences in grain structure for a metal that been cold worked and one that has
been cold works and then recrystallized. [10]
b. Briefly cite differences between recovery and recrystallization processes.
[10]
Question 4 ( 20 marks)

Two specimens of the same metal are deformed plastically. The results are recorded in Table 2.

Circular (diameter mm) Rectangular (mm)

Original dimensions 20 120 x 170
Deformed dimensions 15 70 x 200

a. Which of these specimens will be the hardest after plastic deformation? [15]
b. Explain your answer above. [5]

Question 5 ( 20 marks)

a. What is the magnitude of the maximum stress that exists at the tip of an internal crack having a
radius of curvature 2x 10-4mm and a crack length of 2 x 10-2mm when a tensile stress of 170
MPa is applied? [10]
b. Explain why fracture strength of brittle materials are usually lower that theoretically expected
values. [10]
