3 Abstract
For highly integrated systems PQ (Power Quality) problems are growing in importance
since they are sensitive to voltage dips and distortions. In electrical network, approximately all
PQ issues get initiated in distribution systems. The switching devices which are responsible to
draw harmonic and reactive power from supply are UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supplies),
rectifier load, ASDs (Adjustable Speed Drives) and SMPS (Switched Mode Power Supply) in
addition with linear reactive loads. It causes the PQ problems such as poor power factor, high
harmonics components in source current, large neutral current and imbalanced source currents.
The load terminal voltage and voltage at point of common coupling (PCC) gets disturbed as well
as unbalanced when these currents flow through the feeder impedance. There are many ways to
lessen these issues. One of them is using Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices in
distribution systems with different application and control algorithm. These devices are defined
under the phrase ‘custom power’
