tutorial_4

This document contains a tutorial with various mathematical problems, including functions, logarithms, parametric equations, and radioactive decay modeling. It requires the student to express variables in terms of others, find inverses, and analyze curves formed by parametric equations. Additionally, it covers topics such as the properties of one-to-one functions and the derivation of Cartesian equations from parametric forms.

MAM1020F Tutorial 4

1. (a) Given
200π
H= b2
,
2 + ln ax
express x as a function of H.
(b) Given
L
b = a e 2k −1 ,
express L as a function of b.

2. (a) Find the range and domain of f (x) = 4 − e3x . Find f −1 and
give its domain and range.
4x − 3
(b) Show that g(x) = is a one to one function.
2 + 3x
(c) Find g −1 (x).
(d) If an arbitrary function k and an arbitrary function l are one-to-
one functions, show that k ◦ l is one-to-one too (your proof must
work for any such functions; checking one case won’t be good
enough).
4ex − 3
(e) Show that h(x) = is a one-to-one function (use your
2 + 3ex
answers to (b) and (d)). Find its inverse (use the fact that (f ◦
g)−1 (x) = (g −1 ◦ f −1 )(x)).
1
3. (a) Write as a single logarithm: ln x + 3 ln(x + 1) − 2 ln(x2 + 3).
2

(b) Solve the following inequality ln x − 8 ≤ 5

4. Suppose that a particle has x and y coordinates given in terms of time,

t, as follows:

x(t) = 1 + t2 and y(t) = t4 + 2t2 + 3 for 0 ≤ t ≤ 2.

(a) Calculate the points (x(t), y(t)) for t = 0, 1 and 2.

(b) Plot these three points on the xy-plane.
(c) Calculate and plot a few more such points for 0 < t < 2.

1
(d) Guess what sort of curve is formed by all such points for 0 ≤ t ≤ 2.
Give a rough sketch even if you can’t guess. To finish the question,
try to write y just in terms of x, in other words, try to eliminate
t from the formula for y. Does this confirm your guess?

5. The path of a particle is described by the following parametric equa-

tions:

x(t) = 2 + sin t and y(t) = 1 + cos t, where 0 ≤ t ≤ 2π.

(a) By eliminating t from the parametric equations, find the cartesian

equation of the curve described.
(b) Sketch the curve and clearly indicate the particle’s path and the
direction of motion as t increases.

6. Do the last question again, but replace the equations for x and y by
x(t) = 2 + 2 sin t and y(t) = 1 + 3 cos t.
7. Find a cartesian equation for the parabola that has turning point (ver-
tex) at (3, −5) and directrix x = 2.
8. Sketch the parabola y 2 − 8y + 12 = 2x and find the vertex, focal point,
and equation of the directrix.
9. In this question, we use the function y = cekt to model radioactive
decay. (You could use a different exponential function, but we want
you to get some practice using e.) Plutonium-239 has a half-life of
24 400 years. We begin with a sample of 10g.
(a) Explain what “half-life” is.
(b) Find constants c and k for this situation.
(c) How long will it take for the original 10g to decay to 1g?
10. Each of the following two sets of parametric equations describes some
point on a curve. In each case, find an equation in x and y whose graph
contains the curve.
(a) y = t2 + 1, x = t2 − 1, −2 ≤ t ≤ 2
(b) y = t3 + 1, x = t3 − 1, −2 ≤ t ≤ 2
(c) How are the curves defined by the two sets of equations different
from each other and different from the graph that has the equation
you found?
