TUTORIAL 1 – EARLY MODERN BUILDING REPORT

LECTURER: AADILA KAJEE

Early Modern Building Report

As a student of architectural history, your task is to write a comprehensive analysis of an early modern
building of your choice. Your analysis should acquire information from architectural theory, historical
narratives, and critical perspectives to provide a nuanced understanding of the building's significance
and legacy within the trajectory of modern architecture.

The report must include:

• Cover page
• Contents page and Introduction
• Brief background: location of the building, function, the designer, when it was built.
• Historical Context: Provide an overview of the historical, social, cultural, and technological
context in which the selected building was conceived and constructed.
• Architectural Features: Analyse the architectural features, spatial organisation, structural
systems, and design elements of the selected building.
• Design Principles: Identify and analyse the design principles, theoretical frameworks, and
aesthetic ideals that informed the creation of the selected building.
• Cultural Significance: Identify and discuss the cultural significance, artistic innovation, and
legacy of the selected building within the broader context of modern architectural history.
• List of references/Bibliography

In addition to the written component, the report is to comprise of pictures, maps, architectural drawings,
sketches and illustrations, where required.

MARK CRITERIA (TOTAL – 50 MARKS):

 20 Marks – Independent research/study in relation the selected building


 10 Marks – Use of images/sketches/graphics and illustrations to analyse the building.
 10 Marks – Academic rigour, legibility, coherence, clarity, structure and presentation quality.
 10 Marks – Referencing and Reference List
