Objective:
To study and identify various network communication buses used in SCADA
systems, their features, and their applications in industrial automation.
Apparatus Required:
1. Cables and connectors for different protocols.
Theory Description:
1. Ethernet/IP:
What is Ethernet?
Ethernet is the most widely used technology for local area networks (LANs),
enabling devices like computers, printers, and servers to communicate with
each other through wired connections. Developed in the 1970s, Ethernet has
evolved over the decades to support faster speeds, greater reliability, and
increased flexibility, making it the backbone of most office and home
networks today.
Ethernet works by breaking down data into packets and transmitting them
over a physical medium such as twisted pair cables (like Cat5e, Cat6) or
fiber optic cables. Devices connected through Ethernet typically use
switches and routers to manage traffic and ensure that data reaches the
correct destination. Ethernet operates based on the IEEE 802.3 standard and
supports both full-duplex (simultaneous sending and receiving) and half-
duplex (one direction at a time) communication.
