Objective:
To study and identify various network communication buses used in SCADA
systems, their features, and their applications in industrial automation.
Apparatus Required:
1. Cables and connectors for different protocols.

Theory Description:

In SCADA systems, network communication buses are essential for transmitting

data between field devices (sensors, actuators, RTUs, and PLCs) and the control
room. Different buses are chosen based on factors like speed, range, topology, and
noise immunity.

Commonly Used Network Communication Buses in SCADA:

1. Ethernet/IP:

What is Ethernet?

Ethernet is the most widely used technology for local area networks (LANs),
enabling devices like computers, printers, and servers to communicate with
each other through wired connections. Developed in the 1970s, Ethernet has
evolved over the decades to support faster speeds, greater reliability, and
increased flexibility, making it the backbone of most office and home
networks today.
Ethernet works by breaking down data into packets and transmitting them
over a physical medium such as twisted pair cables (like Cat5e, Cat6) or
fiber optic cables. Devices connected through Ethernet typically use
switches and routers to manage traffic and ensure that data reaches the
correct destination. Ethernet operates based on the IEEE 802.3 standard and
supports both full-duplex (simultaneous sending and receiving) and half-
duplex (one direction at a time) communication.

Characteristics of Ethernet:

● High Speed: Supports speeds ranging from 10 Mbps (Ethernet) to 100

Gbps (Gigabit and beyond).
● Reliable: Provides stable and low-latency connections compared to
wireless networks.
● Scalable: Can easily expand from small home networks to large
enterprise networks.
● Cost-Effective: Ethernet hardware like switches, routers, and cables
are relatively inexpensive.
● Compatibility: Works with a wide range of devices and is backward
compatible across different Ethernet versions.

Applications of Ethernet:

● Home Networking: Connecting computers, gaming consoles, smart

TVs, and other smart devices.
● Office and Enterprise Networks: Linking computers, printers, servers,
and VoIP phones.
● Data Centers: High-speed Ethernet connects servers and storage
systems for cloud computing and large databases.
● Industrial Automation: Used in manufacturing and production
environments for control systems and sensors.
2. Modbus RTU/Modbus TCP:

3. Profibus:

4. HART:

characteristics and applications
Result:
The characteristics and applications of different communication buses used in
SCADA systems were successfully identified and analyzed.
Conclusion:
This experiment provided insight into various network communication buses used
in SCADA systems. Each bus has specific strengths that make it suitable for
different industrial scenarios, such as high-speed data transfer with Ethernet or
robust long-distance communication with Modbus RTU.
