Ps 2

The document outlines a problem set for the course Transmission Lines and Electromagnetic Fields (EC345AT), consisting of eight problems related to electric forces and fields involving point charges in various configurations. Each problem requires calculations of forces, electric field intensities, and conditions for equilibrium among charges. The problems cover a range of scenarios including point charges in free space, electric fields at specific points, and configurations requiring equilibrium of multiple charges.

Problem set - 2

Course: Transmission Lines and Electromagnetic Fields (EC345AT)

1. Point charges 1 mC, -2 mC are located at (3,2,-1) and (-1,-1,4), respectively. Calculate the electric
force on a 10 nC charge located at (0,3,1) and the electric field intensity at that point.

2. Point charges of 50 nC each are located at A(1, 0, 0), B(-1, 0, 0), C(0, 1, 0), and D(0,-1, 0) in free
space. Find the total force on the charge at A.

3. A charge Q0 located at the origin in free space produces a field for which Ez = 1 kV/m at point P (-
⃗ at M (1, 6, 5) in (b) rectangular coordinates; (c) cylindrical coordinates;
2,1,-1). (a) Find Q0 . Find E
(d) spherical coordinates.

4. A charge of 1 C is located at (2,0,0). What charge must be placed at (-2,0,0) which will make y
component of E⃗ zero at point (1,2,2)?

5. Let Q1 =25 nC (4,-2,7) and Q2 =60 nC(-3,4,-2).

(a) Find E(1,2,3). (b) At what point on y− axis Ex =0?

6. 4 identical 4 nC charges are located at corners of a square 8 cm on a side. A fifth charge is placed
at a point 8 cm distant from the each of the other charges. Calculate the force on fifth charge.

7. Five identical point charges of 5 µC are located at center and corners of a square defined by −1 <
x, y < 1, z = 0.

(a) Find F⃗ on 10 µC located at (0,0,2).

(b) Find E⃗ at (0,0,2).

8. It is required to hold four equal point charges in equilibrium at the corners of a square (±0.5, ±0.5, 0).
Find the point charge which will do this if placed at the centroid of the square.
