Multistandard Mixed Mode (MSMM) is a feature where two standards
can share the same Radio Equipment, sharing resources and HW of RF
System.

This feature can be implemented for GSM/CDMA/WCDMA/LTE.

Benefits
› Increased utilization of Multistandard Radio Units (RUS)
› Reduced number of antennas
› Efficient traffic migration

Jessica Montserrat Cruz (ecrjess) | Ericsson Internal | 2015-02-05 | Page 8

Synchroization between DUs of different standards is requiered due
strict timing requirements on CPRI (Common Public Radio Interfaces).

› There are two options of synchronization:

 From a GPS02 receiver

 Using a synthesized GPS signal –”GPS Out”

Jessica Montserrat Cruz (ecrjess) | Ericsson Internal | 2015-02-05 | Page 9

GPS OUT

The RUS uses the DU connected to the CPRI Port 1 as the timing
reference

Jessica Montserrat Cruz (ecrjess) | Ericsson Internal | 2015-02-05 | Page 10

For this kind of
synchronization a cable must
be connected between DUs
of the different standards that
are sharing the same RU.

The cable type must have a specific Product Number.

Specifically for Release 13 and RBS6601:

For more information, please find it on CPI store.

Jessica Montserrat Cruz (ecrjess) | Ericsson Internal | 2015-02-05 | Page 11

Radio Unit resources will be shared between the different technologies.
Power is one of the most important resources when configuring Mixed
Mode.

Two factors will defined the power values:

- Customer Design
- RRU type

If the total configured output power exceeds the RUS capability the
configuration will be rejected by the RUS

Jessica Montserrat Cruz (ecrjess) | Ericsson Internal | 2015-02-05 | Page 12

Multistandard Mixed Mode Feature, can be compatible with certain RBS
model and RRU types:

Use Radio Configurations of GSM RBS 6000 library.

Radio Bulding Block (RBB), defines a unique way of combining either
RUs, RRUs, or AIR in one sector with connections to DUs and the
antenna system.

RBBs are named as follows: RBB[Tx][Rx]_[C][V], where:

TX Number of Transmitter (TX) branches

RX Number of Receiver (RX) branches (excluding cositing RX ports)
C Number of Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) links
V Version

Jessica Montserrat Cruz (ecrjess) | Ericsson Internal | 2015-02-05 | Page 21

RBB12_2A
› It is used for sectors with one TX branch, two RX branches, and two CPRI connections.
One RRU per sector.

This RBB is used for Mixed Mode with no CPRI sharing and ring topology in GSM.

From release 13 on, the representation of 1 RRU per sector connected on MSMM (without
antenna sharing), can be represented by RBB12_1A.

Jessica Montserrat Cruz (ecrjess) | Ericsson Internal | 2015-02-05 | Page 22

RBB22_4B
› It is used for sectors with two TX branches, two RX branches, and four CPRI
connections. This RBB uses an analog RX cross-connection.

This RBB is used for Mixed Mode, 2 RRU per sector plus antenna sharing.

From release 13 on, the representation of this type of configuration can be represented by
RBB22_2B.

Configure the corresponding RBB (If necessary, desinitialize sectors
before changes):

get sector band|txbranch

acc sector unInitSector
set sector radioBuildingBlock #
acc sector initSector
set sector mixedmode true

To configure the correct RBB, is necessary to know how physical

configuration is.

See RADIO BUILDING BLOCK

Any mistake or wrong RBB configured can cause GSM failures.

The power configuration will depend how physical configuration is and
how many WCDMA carriers the site will have.

This always depends on customer demands.

Remember to see CARRIER CONFIGURATION slide, to know possibilities.

eset . maxTotalOutputPower PWR

PWR= power value, represented on Watts (40W,60W,etc).

Total configured power (WCDMA PWR + GSM POWER), must not

exceed the limit and maximum allowed by the RRU.

IDB CONFIFURATION
OMT version used will depend on the SW release of BTS.
This slide shows how to configure number of sectors, frequency band, if antenna sharing
will be configured and the quantity of RRU per sector.
Click on RE Setup to configure characteristics of each RRU.

This slide shows how Mixed Mode activation on IDB has to be
performed. The RRU type and the quantity of TRX per MCTR.

WARNING!!

It is important to know that RRU 12 type, has

two internal Power Amplifiers.

If needed there will be necessary to create 2

MCTR per RRU due to this reason.

POST CHECK AND
TROUBLESOOT
After all configuration are performed, do a post check of all parameters and
verifiy the site does not present any alarm at both technologies.

If there are issues, verify:

› The feature is installed on both nodes (both standards).

› The SW release of the nodes.
› The correct parameter configuration (BSC, IDB, nodeB).
› The power capactity of RRU.
› The amount of carriers configured at both technologies.
› The physical connections and the matching with the logical ones.
› The connection of GPS cables and the use of the correct RPM.
› That the port Data of RRU (CPRI links) are not crossconnected between
technologies.
