Introduction “Tara Kape!” is considered a new love language among millennials and
Gen Z. Coffee culture in the Philippines has expanded during the pandemic.
Filipinos are known to consider coffee as one of their lifelines to survive a
busy day or to spend time with friends. The growing market became an
opportunity to expand cafés in the Philippines. However, establishing a coffee
shop isn't just about the good aroma and taste of caffeine, aside from its
accompanying food, the scheme of the place should have its own space
identity to complete the coffee experience.
A monochromatic palette, pastel colors, or even earthy tones that
compliment a spacious and simple interior is the standard for the minimalist
design that's been the trend in coffee shops lately. The minimalist aesthetic
is traditionally rooted in Japan's Zen Buddhism and Scandinavian design.
Emerging during the 1960s to reject abstract expressionism, a group of
artists — Donald Judd, Carl Andre, and Dan Flavin created the art to focus
on simple geographic shapes and the form. An open layout and uncluttered
space is a source of relaxation as the focus is on the functionality of certain
objects, which makes cafe owners choose this kind of aesthetic for their
architectural and interior design
Problem Statement As frequent travelers, the couple was inspired by different architectural
styles from their trips abroad; but they have decided to go for a tropical
design for this project. With their big love for coffee, the couple would like
to make the experience of their future customers into a memorable one;
through great food, excellent customer service and aesthetically pleasing
place. To better manage this dream project, the couple plans to combine the
café and their house into a single three-level structure. The couple would
also like to take advantage of the Metro Manila’s Cityscape view using half of
the uppermost floor as a deck which will be a part of the coffee shop to
attract more customers. As the Architect, your task is to deliver an effective
design providing all the requirements of the client without sacrificing their
privacy and comfort.
Problem Context A young professional couple inherited a rectangular lot in R2 basic Zone
located in Antipolo, Rizal with a lot area of Five hundred seventy-three-point
fifty square meters (573.50 sqm). The said lot is bounded by a main
thoroughfare with a width of fifteen meters on the West and another road
with a width of eight meters on the South. The site has a frontage measuring

to Thirty-one meters (31.00 m) and has seven percent (7%) slope towards
West.
The remaining sides of the lot is already occupied by an existing
residential houses. Located on a higher elevation, the site has a clear view
of Metro Manila’s cityscape made even more beautiful by the sunset. This
scenery inspired the couple to start making their dream house x cafe into
reality.
