CHBE604 Homework 7 S2025

The document outlines Homework 7 for CHBE 604 Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, which includes three problems focused on thermodynamic cycles. Problem 1 involves calculating the thermal efficiency and work of a reversible cycle with an ideal gas, Problem 2 examines a Carnot cycle with air between specified temperature reservoirs, and Problem 3 addresses the expansion of propane in a turbine. Each problem is assigned a value of 20 points.

HOMEWORK 7

Problem 1 (20 points)

A reversible cycle executed by 1 mole of an ideal gas with 𝑐" = 2.5𝑅 and 𝑐( = 1.5𝑅.
The following three steps are involved:
Step (1 → 2): Starting at state 1( 700𝐾, 1.5𝑏𝑎𝑟), the gas is cooled at constant pressure to 350𝐾
Step (2 → 3): From state 2 (350 K and 1.5 bar), the gas is isothermally compressed to state 3
Step (3 → 1): The gas returns to state 1 along a path of which PT=constant
Calculate the thermal efficiency of this cycle process, and the work from each individual step.

Problem 2 (20 points)

One mole of air undergoes a Carnot cycle. The hot reservoir is at 800℃ and the cold reservoir is at 25℃.
The pressure ranges between 0.2 𝑏𝑎𝑟 and 60 𝑏𝑎𝑟. Determine the net work produced and the efficiency of
the cycle.

Problem 3 (20 points)

8
Propane at 350℃ and 600 𝑐𝑚 ;𝑚𝑜𝑙 is expanded in a turbine. The exhaust pressure is atmospheric. What
is the lowest possible exhaust temperature? How much work is obtained? You may assume ideal gas
behavior and that heat transfer to the surroundings is negligible.
