Assignment-02

The document outlines Assignment No. 2 for the CE-463 Irrigation Engineering course at NUST Institute of Civil Engineering, due on April 3, 2024. It includes four questions requiring the application of Kennedy’s and Lacey’s theories to design earthen canals based on specified parameters. Questions 3 and 4 are noted as not part of the Mid Semester Exam, with relevant topics to be covered in a future class.

CE-463 Irrigation Engineering
Assignment No. 2
DEADLINE: 03 April 2024
NOTE: Submission Link @LMS & Only Handwritten Solution is Acceptable

Q1 Apply Kennedy’s theory to design an earthen canal for the following:

Discharge, Q = 14 cumecs
Kutter’s N = 0.0225
Critical Velocity Ratio, m = 1
Side Slope of Channel, ½H:1V
Channel Bed Slope, S = 5000H:1V

Q2 Apply Lacey’s Regime theory to design an earthen channel section and the maximum flow that can be
allowed in the channel if the bed slope of channel in alluvium is S=1/5000. Assume Lacey’s silt factor (f)
equal to 0.9 and side slope ½H:1V.

Q3 Apply Kennedy’s theory by using Garret’s Diagrams to design an earthen canal for data given in Q1. Also
attach the Garret’s Diagrams showing the values selected for the design procedure.

Q4 Apply Lacey’s Regime theory by using Lacey’s Regime Diagrams to design an earthen canal for data
given in Q2. Also attach the Lacey’s Regime Diagrams showing the values selected for the design
procedure.

Note: Q3 & Q4 are not part of Mid Semester Exam (MSE), the relevant topic will be covered during next class
