1 Introduction to AutoCAD.
2 Commands used in AutoCAD.
Applications of AutoCAD:
1. Circuit & Schematic Design: Used to create detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and
circuit layouts.
2. Electrical System Layouts: Design power distribution systems, lighting layouts, and fire alarm
systems.
3. Control Systems Design: Create PLC wiring diagrams, relay logic, and control panel designs.
4. Building Electrical Layouts: Design electrical systems in buildings, including power, lighting, and
cable routing.
5. PCB Design: Supports the creation of PCB layouts and component placement for electronics.
6. 3D Modeling: Allows for 3D visualization of electrical systems and components in real-world
space.
7. Site Planning: Plan electrical installations and systems for industrial sites and construction
projects.
8. Documentation: Generate Bills of Materials (BoM) and detailed drawings for reporting and
installation.
9. BIM Integration: Works with Building Information Modeling (BIM) to design intelligent electrical
systems in buildings.
10.Simulations & Analysis: Used for designing layouts those are tested in specialized simulation
software.
CAD PACKAGES:

Key Features of AutoCAD Workspace:
1. Ribbon Interface:
Houses commonly used tools and commands in a customizable toolbar.
Organizes commands into tabs for easier access.
2. Quick Access Toolbar:
Offers fast access to frequently used commands like save, undo, and print.
Customizable for individual workflows.
3. Command Line:
Essential for typing and executing commands.
4. Drawing Area:
Central space for creating and modifying drawings.
Includes zoom, pan, and view control features for navigation.
5. Status Bar:
Provides real-time information about drawing settings, coordinates, and snap settings.
6. Tool Palettes:
Organized sets of tools and blocks that can be accessed with a click.
Customizable to include frequently used tools.
7. Dynamic Input:
Provides a user-friendly, context-sensitive input mode that allows entering commands and
values directly near the cursor.
8. Model & Layout Tabs:
Model Tab: For creating 2D and 3D drawings.
Layout Tab: For preparing the drawings for printing and organizing viewports.
9. Layers:
The layer management system for organizing objects by properties such as colour, linetype,
and lineweight.
10. Blocks and References:
Reusable design elements that can be inserted and updated across drawings.
Xrefs for linking external drawings.
Templates in AutoCAD help maintain consistency across drawings. They contain predefined
settings like units, layers, styles and other drawing elements.
Default Templates: AutoCAD comes with built-in templates like acad.dwt for metric units or
acadiso.dwt for imperial units.
Custom Templates: Users can create their own templates by saving a drawing with all the
necessary settings (units, layers, styles) and using it as a base for new projects.
Templates can be set during the "New Drawing" creation process and allow a user to
maintain standardized settings across multiple projects.
Command: NEW (or when starting a new drawing).
The LIMITS command defines the visible area of your drawing and sets the boundaries
within which you can draw.
Steps to set limits: Enter the command LIMITS, then specify the lower-left corner
coordinates (e.g., 0,0). Next, define the upper-right corner of the drawing limits (e.g.,
100,100).
Key Notes: Drawing limits do not affect the actual scale or size of your drawing but rather
restrict the viewable area within AutoCAD. You can adjust or turn off limits if you need a
larger drawing area or if you want to use a different boundary.
Command: LIMITS.
To set the units for your drawing, use the UNITS command. This allows you to define the
measurement system (Imperial or Metric), precision and other unit-specific settings.
Key settings:
o Type: Choose between Decimal, Architectural, Engineering or other types based on your
This ensures that the dimensions, scaling, and objects within your drawing follow the
appropriate unit system.
Command: UNITS.
Grid Settings:
Grid Display: The grid is visible in the drawing area but does not appear in printed drawings.
It acts as a guide for positioning objects.
Command: Use the GRID command to toggle the grid on or off. The shortcut key F7 can also
be used to turn the grid on or off.
Grid Spacing: To customize grid spacing, use the GRID command and access the settings. You
can define the distance between grid lines, both in the X and Y directions. Spacing settings
can be set to match your drawing’s units (e.g., 1 unit, 5 units) for precise placement.
Snap and Grid: The grid can be linked with the Snap function (controlled via the SNAP
command) to enable snapping to grid points, improving drawing accuracy. The Snap feature
allows objects to "snap" to specific grid intersections, which is especially useful when
working with precise layouts.
Grid Major and Minor Divisions: You can set the grid to have major divisions (e.g., every 10
units) and minor divisions (e.g., every 1 unit), making it easier to scale your drawing.
Snap Settings:
Snap Settings are used to control the precision of object placement by restricting cursor
movement to specific intervals, making it easier to draw objects accurately. Snap mode is
especially useful for creating precise geometry and aligning objects in your drawings.
Command: SNAP
Shortcut key to toggle Snap on or off is F9 key, or access Snap settings via the status bar or
command line.
Snap Spacing: Snap spacing defines the interval at which the cursor can "snap" to points. For
example, if the snap spacing is set to 1 unit, the cursor will only move to every 1-unit interval
on the grid. You can set the snap spacing to match your drawing’s scale and units, such as 1
unit, 5 units, or smaller values for higher precision.
Snap and Grid Integration: When Snap is enabled, it works in tandem with the grid settings.
The snap points are usually aligned with the grid, but can also be customized to use different
intervals. Snap can be used for both 2D and 3D drawing, ensuring objects align with the snap
points.
Snap to Points: While in Snap mode, the cursor automatically jumps to the nearest snap
point, allowing you to place objects precisely at regular intervals without manually
measuring.
Isoplane and Isometric Snap: In isometric drawings, Snap settings can be adjusted to
provide isoplane snapping, which restricts movement along isometric angles, helping create
isometric views and shapes easily.
