Practice Lab. In this module, you will be provided with the instructions and
devices needed to develop your hands-on skills.

Various operating systems are available which can be used for different
purposes and is dependent on user preference. The most used and well-known
operating system is Microsoft Windows, which is incorporated into most
companies as a desktop workstation. Other popular operating systems available
include Linux-based and MacOS operating systems.

With the evolution of the IT Industry, the need for more mobile devices
increased, which led to the development of various mobile operating systems.
These include the following, ChromeOS, Android and IOS.

In this module, different operating systems and their functionalities will be

explored.

Exercise 2 - Identifying Linux Operating Systems

and its Functionality
Since the first release of the Linux operating system in the early 90s, several
different flavors or variants of Linux have been developed. The biggest
differentiator between Linux flavors is the kernel used to develop the specific
flavor. The most well-known kernels are Debian, Red Hat and Suse kernels.

In this exercise, the different types of Linux operating systems will be identified,
and their functionalities explored.

Learning Outcomes
After completing this exercise, you should be able to:

Differentiate between Different Linux Operating Systems

Your Devices
You will be using the following devices in this lab. Please power these on now.

PLABSUSE - (SUSE - Standalone Server)

PLABUBUNTU - (Ubuntu - Standalone Server)

Task 1 - Differentiate between Different Linux

Operating Systems
Different Linux operating systems have been released since the first version in
the early 90s. The different flavors have different functionalities.

In this task, different Linux operating systems will be explored.

Step 1
Connect to PLABUBUNTU.

Right-click on the Desktop and select Open in Terminal.

Exercise 4 - Differentiating between Operating

System’s File Systems
Operating systems have different requirements for the file system on which it will
be installed.

Microsoft operating systems can be installed on the following file systems:

New Technology File System (NTFS): This is the most popular file system
used when installing a Windows Desktop operating system.
File Allocation Table 32 (FAT32): This file system is used when older
Windows versions are installed, such as a 32-bit operating system. This file
system has restrictions on file sizes and is not used that often.

Linux operating system can be installed on the following file systems:

Third extended file system (ext3): This is a journaling file system used to install
the kernel for the linux operating systems and was used in the early releases of
Linux operating systems.

Fourth extended file system (ext4): This journalling filing system improves the
ext file system with backward compatibility and is also used to install the kernel
for linux operating systems.

Different file systems can cause compatibility issue when files need to be shared.
Hence, careful consideration needs to be taken into account when installing
specific operating systems.

In the exercise, different file systems used by different operating systems will be
identified.

Learning Outcomes
After completing this exercise, you should be able to:

Identify File Systems of Different Operating Systems

Your Devices
