Welcome to the Configuring and Managing a Windows Device using Settings


Practice Lab. In this module, you will be provided with the instructions and
devices needed to develop your hands-on skills.

A Windows operating system can be configured and customized according to


the user's preference. In previous versions of Windows, the Control Panel
application was used to configure the Windows device. The Control Panel
application has been deprecated in Windows 10 & 11 and has been replaced with
Settings for the configuration of the Windows operating system.

In this module, the different features and functionalities of Settings will be


explored.

With the release of Windows 10, the way the system is configured was changed
with the introduction of the Settings page. Settings are used to configure the
device according to the user’s preference. These settings include the following:

Time and Language


Update and Security
Personalization
Apps
Privacy
System
Network and Internet
Gaming
Accounts

In this exercise, the configuration of Windows 10 & 11 devices will be explored


using Settings.

You will be using the following devices in this lab. Please power these on now.

PLABDC01 - (Windows Server 2019 - Domain Controller)


PLABWIN10 - (Windows 10 - Domain Member Workstation)
PLABWIN11 - (Windows 11 - Domain Member Workstation)

Task 1 - Customizing a Windows 10 Device using


Settings
Windows devices can be configured according to the user’s preference using
Settings. These configurations include the Time and Date, Region and several
other configurations.

In this task, Windows 10 will be customized using Settings.

Step 1
Connect to PLABWIN10.

Click the Start charm and select Settings.

On the Windows Settings page, select Time & Language.

Step 3
In the Settings - Date & time pane, select (UTC+00:00) Dublin, Edinburgh,
Lisbon, London from the Time zone drop-down menu.

Note: Depending on where a user is located, the appropriate Time zone


needs to be selected to ensure the correct time is displayed for the user.
Changing the time zone will affect all the applications installed on the
device.

Step 4
On the Date & time pane, set the Set time automatically slider to On.

Note: Setting the time to automatically update it will ensure the time of the
system is always correct. Active internet connections are needed to ensure
this.

Step 5
In the left pane of the Settings window, select Language.

Step 6
On the Settings - Language pane, select Add a language from the Preferred
languages section.

Step 7
On the Choose a language to install pop-up window, select Afrikaans and click
Next.

Note: Depending on the user's preference, a specific language pack can be


installed. In this example, the Afrikaans language pack will be installed.

Step 8
On the Install language features pop-up window, untick Handwriting.

Select Install.

Note: The handwriting feature for a Language pack enables the features for
devices with an interactive screen and a handwriting device, for example, a
stylus pen.

Step 9
Select Home on the Settings window.

Step 10
On the Windows Settings window, select Update & Security.

Step 11
In the Settings - Update & Security pane, select Windows Security.

Note: The device’s update status can be verified on the Windows Update
pane, and a manual check for updates can be done. It is best practice to
keep the device up to date with the latest updates to ensure the device is
secure.

Step 12
In the Settings - Windows Security pane, click the Open Windows Security
button.

Step 13
On the Windows Security window, select Virus & threat protection on the left
pane.

Note: The Windows Security window displays the various security settings
for the Windows device. The security status of the Windows device can be
configured here.

Step 14
The Virus & threat protection pane provides various settings to protect your
device against malicious threats.

Close the Windows Security and Settings windows.

Step 15
Right-click on the Desktop and select Personalize.

Step 16
The Settings - Background pane is displayed.

Note: The Background for the Windows device can be changed according
to the user’s preference. Due to restrictions in the lab, it can not be changed.

On the Settings - Personalization pane, select Colors.

Step 17
In the Settings - Colors pane, select the Light radio button from the Choose
your default Windows mode section.

Note: The user can customize the appearance of the Desktop according to
their personal preference.

Select Lock screen from the Settings - Personalization pane.

customized, for example, the background of the locked screen.

Scroll down in the Settings - Apps & features pane and select Cortana.

Note: The Apps & features pane in the Settings window can be used to
configure and remove applications on the Windows device.

Task 2 - Customizing a Windows 11 Device using


Settings
Similar to Windows 10, a Windows 11 device can be configured and customized
according to the user’s preference.

In this task, Settings will be used to configure a Windows 11 device.

Step 1
Connect to PLABWIN11.

Right-click the Start charm and select Settings.

device and can be used to modify the current ethernet settings.

applications. Depending on the use of the device, using this option, the
device can be optimized for gaming purposes.

to the device, for example, a Microsoft email account, to synchronize
settings across different devices.

Note: The Accounts > Access work or school pane enables the user to
connect the device to an organization using a work email address. For
example, the device can be joined to an Azure Active Directory or an on-
premise Active Directory.
