Midterm: (20 Marks)
1. A converter is feeding the armature circuit of a DC motor, whose equivalent circuit is
represented by an armature resistance, armature inductance and back emf voltage, as
shown in Fig. 1. If the switching period is very long, derive an expression of the load
current and find the instant of zero current. (5 marks)
2. For the dc chopper circuit shown in Fig. 2, describe the operation in quadrant 1 and 4.
(3 marks)
3. A buck-boost regulator has an input voltage of 12 V. The duty cycle is 0.6 and the
switching frequency is 25 kHz. The inductance L = 250 µH and filter capacitance C = 220
µF. The average load current is 1.2 A. Determine
a) the average output voltage; (1 mark)
b) the peak to peak average output voltage ripple; (1 mark)
c) the peak to peak ripple current of inductor; (1 mark)
d) the peak current of the transistor; (1 mark)
e) the critical values of L and C. (1 mark)

4. What are the main methods used to minimize the harmonics output of single phase
inverter circuits? (2 marks)
5. A single phase bridge inverter has a resistive load of R = 4 Ω and the dc input voltage is
24 V. Determine: (5 marks)
a) the rms output voltage at the fundamental frequency.
b) The total harmonic distortion.
c) The average output voltage.
