Assignment 1
Assignment 1
(b) Explain why scale is not important in spatial data storage, whether in the GIS
or in a separate spatial database. Provide cases of applications or spatial data
use, in which scale may matter in spatial data storage. [3]
2. (a) There exists an obvious relationship between remotely sensed images and
geographic fields, as we have defined them in this chapter, yet the two are not
the same thing. Elaborate on this and discuss what are the differences. [4]
3. (a) A rule-of-thumb, natural phenomena are more often fields, whereas man-made
phenomena are more often objects. Provide counter examples from your
favourite GIS application domain to this rule: name at least two natural
phenomena that are better perceived as object(s) and name two man-made [4]
phenomena that are better perceived as field.
(b) Using example(s) describe the relational data model, the structures used to
define the database.
