Assignment 2_2024

The assignment focuses on transport phenomena, specifically analyzing a piping system conveying ethanol, with tasks including calculating pressure and Reynolds numbers at different sections. It also covers the definition and types of flow meters, as well as the concept of pumps and pump cavitation, requiring a one-page summary on various pump types. The total marks for the assignment are 50, with specific due date and question breakdown provided.

Assignment 2

Due date: 06 December

1. A piping system is conveying 0.28 m3/s of ethanol. At a particular cross section of the
system, section 1, the pipe diameter is 330 mm, the pressure is 124 kPa, and the elevation is
42.7 m. At another cross section further downstream, section 2, the pipe diameter is 200 mm,
and the elevation is 22.3 m. Assume that the specific gravity of the ethanol is 0.78 and its
viscosity is 1 cP.

(a) What is the pressure at section 2? [8]

(b) Calculate the Reynolds number at Sections 1 and 2. Comment on your results. [6]

2. (a) What is a flow meter. [2]

(b) List and describe (with the aid of diagrams) any four types of flowmeters. [12]

3. (a) What is a pump. [2]

(b) Explain the term pump cavitation. [4]

(c) In your own words, write a one-page summary on types of pumps. Use this resource as
a guide to your summary. https://www.elprocus.com/different-types-of-pumps-working-and-
