Random Sampling

The document covers concepts related to random sampling, including the definition of random sampling, the difference between parameters and statistics, and the sampling distribution of sample means. It outlines the steps to construct the sampling distribution and provides an example using a population of numbers. The document concludes with a thank you note for studying.

Module 5:
- Random Sampling
- Parameter vs. Statistic
-Sampling Distribution
Random Sampling
It is a method of choosing a sample of
observations from a population to make
assumptions about the population. It is also
called probability sampling.
Parameter vs. Statistic
SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION OF
SAMPLE MEANS

The probability distribution that describes the

probability for each mean of all the samples
with the same sample size n is called
sampling distribution.
STEPS IN CONSTRUCTING THE SAMPLING
DISTRUBUTION OF THE MEANS

∑
1. Compute for the population mean. =

2
2. Compute for the population variance 2 = ∑( − )
3. Determine the number of sets of all possible random
samples that can be drawn from the given population by
using the formula where N is the population size and r is
sample size.
4. List all the possible samples and compute the mean of each
sample.
5. Compute the sampling distribution of the sample means.
6. Compute the mean of the sampling distribution of the sample
means.
7. Compute the variance of the sampling distribution of the
sample means.
EXAMPLE

A population consists of the

numbers 2, 4, 9, 10, and 5. List all
possible samples of size 3 from
this population and compute the
mean of each sample.
STEP 1
1. Compute for the population mean. -List
 =
∑

=
2 + 4 + 9 + 10 + 5
5
-Add
=
30
5
=6 -Divide
So, the mean of the population is 6.00.
STEP 2
- Mean
2. Compute for the population variance
- Subtract
- Squared
2 =
∑( − )2
- Add

- Divide
∑(2 − 6)2 + (4 − 6)2 + (9 − 6)2 + (10 − 6)2 + (5 − 6)2
=
5
16+4+9+16+1
=
5

2 = 9.2
