Submitted by,
The success and outcome of this report required a lot of guidance and assistance
from many people, and we are extremely privileged to have got this all through
the completion of my report. All that we have done is only due to such supervision
and assistance and we would not forget to thank them. We are extremely thankful
to our project guide Lect. Mr. V.T.MASURKAR and Head of Electronics and
Computer Department Prof. M. P. Patil who took keep interest on our project
work and guided us all along, till the completion of our report work by providing
all the necessary information for developing a good system and for providing such
a nice support and guidance, although he had busy schedule. We would also like
to remember Principal Madam Prof. R. S. Patil for encouragement and moreover
for timely support and guidance till the completion of our report work. We are
thankful to and fortunate enough to get constant encouragement, support, and
guidance from all teaching staff of ELECTRONICS AND COMPUTER
ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT which helped Us in successfully completing
our report work. Also, we would like to extend our sincere esteem to all staff in
the laboratory for their timely support.

PART A: Micro Project Proposal
NETWORK LAYOUT FOR DEPARTMENT
1.0 Rationale
Designing a network layout for a department using Star Topology and LAN
enables efficient communication and resource sharing. Star Topology offers
central control through a hub or switch, ensuring high data transfer speeds,
scalability, and fault tolerance. This approach is essential for optimizing the
department's operations and ensuring smooth connectivity and management of
resources within the office environment.
Star topology is commonly used in LAN networks for its simplicity, ease of
management, and scalability. The central hub or switch serves as the core device that
connects all nodes, ensuring smooth communication and preventing network
congestion. Several studies highlight that star topology ensures fault tolerance, as
failure in one connection does not affect the entire network. The network's
centralization allows for easier troubleshooting and management of resources
4.0 Proposed Methodology
The proposed methodology involves designing a star topology LAN for the
department, selecting appropriate devices such as switches and network cables.
The network will be mapped out, with clear connections and specifications for
each component. The layout will ensure efficient communication, fault tolerance,
and scalability. A detailed report will document the design and network
specifications.
1.0 Rationale :-
The proposed network layout is designed based on the following
principles:
Performance: Ensuring high-speed connectivity through wired and
wireless options.
Scalability: The star topology allows easy expansion of the network.
Security: Firewalls and VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks) enhance
security by segmenting traffic.
Reliability: Redundancy in internet connectivity ensures
uninterrupted service.
Network Type:
➢ LAN (Local Area Network): Suitable for departments within
a single building or campus.
➢ Wi-Fi network: For wireless connectivity within the
department.
➢ Internet Access: Provided via a router to allow the
department to connect to the internet.
4.3 Topology :-
The topology describes the physical layout of the network devices.
Network Topology:
Star Topology: All devices (computers, printers, servers, etc.) are
connected to a central device like a **Switch* or *Router*. This is
common because it is easy to manage and troubleshoot. If one device
fails, the rest of the network can still operate.
Components Used:
▪ Router: Connects the LAN to the internet.
▪ Switch: Connects multiple devices within the department.
▪ Access Points (APs): For wireless connections.
▪ Firewall: To ensure network security.
• Switch:
o Specification: Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series (or equivalent).
o Purpose: To provide high-speed, secure, and reliable
connectivity between devices within the LAN. The switch
will handle Ethernet-based traffic, segmenting the network
for better performance.
o Ports: The switch should have 24 to 48 Gigabit Ethernet
ports, with some 10-Gigabit ports for high-bandwidth devices
(servers or storage).
• Firewall:
o Specification: Fortinet FortiGate 60F or similar.
o Purpose: To protect the department’s network from external
threats and unauthorized access, ensuring data security and
integrity.
• Cabling:
o Specification: Cat 6a Ethernet cables for all wired
connections.
o Purpose: To provide reliable, high-speed data transmission.
The use of Cat 6a ensures 10Gbps support and better
shielding for less interference.
