PART B – Micro-Project Report
NETWORK LAYOUT FOR DEPARTMENT

1.0 Rationale :-
The proposed network layout is designed based on the following
principles:
Performance: Ensuring high-speed connectivity through wired and
wireless options.
Scalability: The star topology allows easy expansion of the network.
Security: Firewalls and VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks) enhance
security by segmenting traffic.
Reliability: Redundancy in internet connectivity ensures
uninterrupted service.

2.0 Aim of Micro-Project Creation:-

The aim of this micro project is to design an efficient and scalable network
layout for the department. This network will ensure seamless
communication, secure data transmission, and optimal resource utilization.
The project focuses on selecting the appropriate network type, topology,
transmission media, and hardware components to achieve high
performance and reliability.

3.0 Course Outcome Addressed :-

➢ Understanding network types and topologies.

➢ Knowledge of LAN configuration and management.
➢ Proficiency in selecting appropriate network components.
➢ Ability to design fault-tolerant network systems.
➢ Familiarity with network troubleshooting and performance
monitoring.
➢ Skill in creating network diagrams and layouts.
4.0 Literature review :-
4.1 Introduction :-
In today’s digital world, an efficient and well-structured network is
essential for seamless communication, data sharing, and resource
management within a department. A properly designed network
enhances productivity, ensures secure data transmission, and provides a
stable working environment for employees.

This project focuses on designing a *Local Area Network (LAN)* for

the department, selecting an appropriate *network topology, choosing
the right **transmission media, and specifying the necessary **hardware
components. The network layout aims to provide **high-speed
connectivity, security, and scalability* while supporting both wired and
wireless devices.
The report will cover the type of network selected, the advantages of the
chosen topology, the transmission media used for connectivity, and the
specifications of various network components. A well-illustrated
network diagram will also be included to visualize the layout.
By implementing this structured network design, the department will
benefit from *improved communication, centralized data access, and
enhanced security measures*, ensuring an efficient and future-proof
networking solution.

4.2 Type of Network :-

The type of network is primarily determined by the size and scope of the
department. For a typical department in a company, the network would
likely be a *Local Area Network (LAN)*, allowing communication and
resource sharing within a confined area.

Network Type:
➢ LAN (Local Area Network): Suitable for departments within
a single building or campus.
➢ Wi-Fi network: For wireless connectivity within the
department.
➢ Internet Access: Provided via a router to allow the
department to connect to the internet.
4.3 Topology :-
The topology describes the physical layout of the network devices.

Network Topology:
Star Topology: All devices (computers, printers, servers, etc.) are
connected to a central device like a **Switch* or *Router*. This is
common because it is easy to manage and troubleshoot. If one device
fails, the rest of the network can still operate.

Components Used:
▪ Router: Connects the LAN to the internet.
▪ Switch: Connects multiple devices within the department.
▪ Access Points (APs): For wireless connections.
▪ Firewall: To ensure network security.

4.4 Transmission Media:

• Ethernet Cables (Twisted Pair - Cat 5e or Cat 6): These cables
will be used to connect workstations, printers, and other devices
within the LAN. The use of Cat 5e or Cat 6 cables will ensure
reliable and fast data transmission.

• Fiber Optic Cables: For high-speed connections between

departments or data centers, fiber optic cables will be used. They
offer high bandwidth and long-distance transmission without loss of
signal quality.

• Wireless (Wi-Fi): For mobile devices, Wi-Fi routers will be

deployed to offer internet access and intranet connectivity. Wi-Fi
standards like 802.11ac or 802.11ax can be used for better
performance.
4.5 Hardware Components and Specifications:
• Router:
o Specification: Cisco ISR 4000 Series or a similar high-
performance router.
o Purpose: To provide internet access, handle routing between
different networks (like the departmental LAN and the
internet), and provide network address translation (NAT) for
internal devices.

• Switch:
o Specification: Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series (or equivalent).
o Purpose: To provide high-speed, secure, and reliable
connectivity between devices within the LAN. The switch
will handle Ethernet-based traffic, segmenting the network
for better performance.
o Ports: The switch should have 24 to 48 Gigabit Ethernet
ports, with some 10-Gigabit ports for high-bandwidth devices
(servers or storage).

• Access Points (Wi-Fi):

o Specification: Cisco Meraki MR36 or similar.
o Purpose: To provide wireless coverage across the
department. The APs should support the latest Wi-Fi
standards (802.11ac or 802.11ax) for optimal coverage and
speed.

• Firewall:
o Specification: Fortinet FortiGate 60F or similar.
o Purpose: To protect the department’s network from external
threats and unauthorized access, ensuring data security and
integrity.

• Network Attached Storage (NAS):

o Specification: Synology DiskStation DS920+ or equivalent.
o Purpose: To provide centralized file storage, backup, and
sharing for department files, documents, and applications.

• Cabling:
o Specification: Cat 6a Ethernet cables for all wired
connections.
o Purpose: To provide reliable, high-speed data transmission.
The use of Cat 6a ensures 10Gbps support and better
shielding for less interference.
4.6 Network Diagram:-

• Router: Connects the department to the internet and external networks.

• Switch: Centralized device to connect all department workstations and
devices.
• Firewall: Protects the network from external threats.
• Access Points (Wi-Fi): Provide wireless internet access to devices in the
department.
• Servers: Host department applications and file storage (e.g., for data
backups, website hosting).
• Network Attached Storage (NAS): For file sharing and backup
purposes.
4.7 Network Configuration Considerations:-
• IP Addressing: Static IP addresses will be assigned to critical
devices such as the router, servers, and printers. Dynamic IP
addresses can be assigned to workstations using DHCP (Dynamic
Host Configuration Protocol).

• VLANs: VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks) may be used for

separating different segments of the department’s network. For
example, one VLAN could be for management, another for
employees, and another for guest access.

• Redundancy and Backup: Use of redundant switches and router

configurations, with failover capabilities, to ensure high availability
of network services.

4.8 Network Security:-

• Encryption: Ensure that all sensitive data is encrypted using
protocols like WPA3 for Wi-Fi and SSL/TLS for web traffic.
• Access Control: Use of strong authentication mechanisms for
accessing the network and resources (e.g., multi-factor
authentication).
• Regular Monitoring: Network monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds,
PRTG Network Monitor) to keep track of the health and performance
of the network.
5.0 Conclusion:-
This design provides a reliable, high-speed, and secure network that
meets the communication needs of the department. The use of a star
topology ensures ease of management and troubleshooting, while the
combination of wired and wireless media provides flexibility.
