TOPIC: Introduction
- What is this subject all about?
- The word pastoral comes from the Latin word pastoralis which has the Latin word pastor as
its root.
- The Latin word pastor means shepherd.
- That gives us an idea what role do we play in the Church.
- This subject presents the concept that training and formation of Church workers and leaders
are necessary so that there will be more skilled and committed evangelizers and servant
leaders in the Christian communities.
- This aims at preparing the students to render services to the Christian community through
their apostolic work.
- What do you notice in our society today?
- How must we live as Catholic Christians in today’s situation?
- The answer to this question leads us back to the model of the early Christian communities
which, fired by the love of Jesus and inspired by his word and Spirit, gathered toworship, to
pray, to share and to serve.
- That is our model for the task of envisioning a Church that is renewed.
1. Unity in Diversity
- When St. Paul wanted to express the unity of Christians, he compared the group of
believers to a human body and called it the body of Christ.
- In this one body there are different parts.
- Each part is needed by every other part; each needs the others as well.
- Each believer has a role to play in the one body.
- In St. Paul’s description of the Church as the body of Christ we can see this characteristic
of the Church.
- There is unity of the believers, but this unity is a unity in diversity.
- In the Church, there are different giftedness and ministries but there is only one body.
- This diversity does not destroy the unity.
- But it brings out the complementarity and necessary contribution of the different
giftedness and ministries.
- Each of us are called upon to share our own goods according to the gift that each has
received (“With great power comes great responsibility.”; “More is asked to those who
are given more.”)
