Content: Word problems involving linear equations with two variables

1. The following graph shows a plane’s elevation relative to the ground (in meters) as a function of
time (in seconds):

a) How long did the plane take to descend?

b) From what elevation did the plane start descending?
c) How fast did the plane descend?

2. To rent a bike, Max pays a flat rate plus an hourly rental fee. The graph shows the amount, C
dollars, he pays based on the number of hours, t, he uses the bike. The following graph shows this
situation:
a) What is the y - intercept of the graph? Explain what the y - intercept represents in the context
of the word problem.
b) What is the slope of the graph? Explain what the slope represents in the context of the word
problem.
c) Find the amount of money Max has to pay to rent the bike for 6 hours.

3. Two containers, P and Q, are filled with different amounts of water. Each container has a small
hole. The graph shows the amount of water, V milliliters, left in each container after x minutes.

a) Write down the initial amount of water in each container.

b) Which container has a bigger hole? Explain your answer mathematically.

4. A plumber charges a fixed price of $8 to go to someone’s house for a repair in concept of

transport and an extra $2 per hour of work.
a) How much does a client have to pay if the plumber does a repair at their house that takes 3
hours? Write down the calculation to find this value.
b) How much does a client have to pay if the plumber does a repair at their house that takes 8
hours? Write down the calculation to find its value.
c) How long was a repair if a client had to pay $34 for the total service? Write down the
calculation to find its value.
d) Write a linear equation with two variables to represent the situation described in the word
problem. Make sure to clearly indicate what each variable represents in the context of the
word problem.
5. The following table shows the price of a telephone bill depending on the number of minutes spent
on calls during a month.

Number of minutes Price

15 $6.80

30 $8.60

40 $9.80

75 $14

100 $17

a) Is the relationship between the number of minutes and price a linear relationship? Justify
your answer.
b) What is the price for speaking one minute with this company?
c) Write an equation with two variables to represent the relationship between the number of
minutes spoken and the price of the final bill. Verify using two of the values from the table
that your equation fits the given information. If your equation does not match the values from
the table, correct it so that it does.
d) Use the equation written in c) to predict how much someone that spoke 90 minutes a certain
month has to pay.

6. Harry took out a loan from the bank. The variable D models Harry’s remaining debt (in dollars) t
months after he took out the loan in the equation 𝐷 =− 200𝑡 + 9000.
a) How much does Harry still have to pay back 6 months after the loan?
b) How many months will it take for Harry to pay off his debt?
c) How much does Harry pay each month?

7. The table below shows the cost C, in dollars, for a company to produce n widgets. Show that the
table represents a linear function, find the equation for this linear situation and then find the cost to
produce 875 widgets.

n 200 250 300 350

C 7900 9650 11400 13150

8. For babysitting, Nicole charges a flat fee of $3 to pay for her transport to the house, plus $5 per
hour. Write an equation for the cost, C, after h hours of babysitting. What do the slope and the
y-intercept represent? How much money will she make if she baby-sits for 5 hours?

9. A car rental company offers two plans for renting a car:

- Plan A: 25 dollars per day and 10 cents per mile
- Plan B: 50 dollars per day with free unlimited mileage
a) Write a linear equation to represent the cost of renting a car with each plan.
b) How many miles would you need to drive for plan B to save you money?

10. Oscar wants to rent a boat. The rental shop charges an initial fee of $12 plus $8 per hour to rent
the boat.
a) If the total cost was $120, how many hours was he on the boat?
b) If he rented the boat for 3 hours, what would be the total cost?
c) Write an equation to represent the total cost of renting a boat for x hours.
