What do you have any idea when you hear

the word Opera? “Opera is a stage play, sir!

“It has singers and

musicians, sir!”

Now that you’ve explored the definition of

opera and developed your own
understanding, let’s watch a video to
experience how it unfolds on stage! Kindly
read the guide questions first.

singing and on how they play.

Okay, now that you have a clear idea of what

an opera is, let us see definition if it align with
your answers.

OPERA

- It is a musical composition having all or

most of its text set to music with arias,
recitative, choruses, duets, trios, etc.
sung to orchestral accompaniment.

- Opera is usually characterized by

elaborate costumes, scenery, and
choreography.
“Soloist, sir!”
“Music Notes, sir!”
“Recitation, sir!”
Given that Opera is a musical composition “Script, sir!”
and an overall stage play, do opera also has
components that make it a whole?

According to your answers on the puzzle

earlier, which do you think are related to the
components of an opera there?

Very good!

To deepen our understanding of the lesson,

let's explore the correct terms for the key
components of an opera. But before that, who
here wants to watch an opera? Who wants to
be part of an opera?

For that, I have here tickets that we will later

use for you to experience what it feels like to
be part of an Opera. So let’s proceed into our
discussion.
D. Discussing
new concepts Components of an Opera
and practicing
new skills #1 1. Libretto

- The written
text or script
of an opera.

- It includes
the dialogue,
lyrics, and
stage
directions. It
contains all
the words
the
performers
will sing or
speak during
the
performance.

In your own understanding, kindly explain “Libretto is like a script in

what libretto is? acting sir as it provides the
dialogue, lyrics for the
actors/actresses”
Score

- It is the written
music for the
performance,
including all the
musical notes for
the singers and
instrumentalists.

- It shows how the

libretto should be
sung and
orchestrated, indicating melodies,
harmonies, rhythms, and instrumental
arrangements.

Upon reading what is score, what do you think

a score looks like? “I think it looks like a paper or
script that has musical notes
What do you think is the difference between in it.”
score and libretto?
“Compared to libretto where
the text and dialogue is the
content, score has the
musical notations.”
In summary, the libretto provides the words,
while the score provides the music. Together,
they create the full dramatic and musical “Words sir!”
experience of an opera. Remember, libretto “Music sir!”
provides the? And score provides the?

Okay! So let’s move on, on Recitative and

Aria. Kindly read their definitions.

2. Recitative

- Declamatory singing, used in the prose

parts and dialogue of opera.

- It is a style of singing in opera and that

is speech-like, used to convey
dialouges.

What is your understanding of recitative? “For me, sir, recitative is a

type of singing where the
singer sings like he/she
recites the lyrics.”
Good! Okay class, now that we’ve read the
definition of recitative and you have an idea
on what a recitative is, let’s try to look at the
video and look at it if your answers are
correct.

La Traviata: Follie! Sempre libera

https://youtu.be/RKRvMmEen5k?
si=XQmxdEki_AdBSBJG

So recitative is a type of singing where the

singer sings like they are reciting the lyrics or
like they are telling a story.

Good! Let’s move on to Aria. Please read the

definitions.

3. Aria

- an air or solo singing part sung by a

principal character. This song is what
the public will remember best when
leaving the opera house. Properly and
well sung, a beautiful aria can bring an
audience to its feet and decide the fate
of an entire opera.

Okay class, to further understand what aria is,

let’s try to watch a performance featuring the
aria singing.
La Bohème: “Quando m’en vo’

si=EEUrohsG7wiTR9Ue
“Aria has more melodic tunes
Upon watching/listening to the video, what do than recitative. Recitative is

Recitative? a story.”
In short, aria emphasize emotion and
musicality while recitative focuses on
storytelling and conversation-like singing. Are
we clear? “Yes sir!”

Very good, class!

E. Discussing Did you know class, that here in our province we

new concepts also have an Operatic singer? Some of you might
and practicing have know or met him or know where he lives.
new skills #2 But let me introduce you our very own Mr.
Joseleo Logdat.

Joseleo Logdat
- Joseleo
Logdat is a
highly talented
Filipino
baritone
singer from
Barangay
Balimbing,
Boac,
Marinduque.
He started
singing as a
choir boy in a chapel within the Barangay
under the tutelage of the late Rev. Fr.
Edwin Sager.

- Joseleo Logdat eventually earned a Master

of Music Degree in Vocal Performance at
Elisabeth University of Music in Hiroshima,
Japan, among others and has competed
and received international vocal and music
competitions in Singapore, Austria, and in
Osaka and Yokohama (Japan).

Here is a short video clip of his performance.
Okay, earlier I put two tickets underneath your
armchairs, attached to them are questions about
the video you have just watch. Kindly search your
armchairs.

Ticket 1. Answer:
1. What did you feel upon watching the
performance of Joseleo Logdat? 1. I felt amazed and
touched by Joseleo
Logdat’s performance
of Kundiman Ay
Langit. His voice was
full of emotion, making
the song feel heartfelt
and beautiful.
Ticket 2. 2. It shows how true love
2. What are your personal interpretations on is pure and heartfelt.
his song? Joseleo Logdat’s
performance made the
song even more
emotional, making me
feel the sincerity and
passion behind the
lyrics."

Good!
This simply shows that, alongside the renowned
and talented artists from other countries, we who
live in the province of Marinduque can also keep
up with them. It shows that we also have the
ability to showcase our skills and talents not just
locally but on international level! So class, if you
have hidden talents in you, believe in yourself, go
on and show them what you got? Okay?
F. Developing So before we proceed on our group activity. I
Mastery have here a short song that will larer be used as
a guide in our activity. This song is “Ang lahat ng
bagay sa mundo”. Kindly listen to the music.

living how to communicate or
Very good! express ourselves sir”

You might think opera is just for grand theaters

and fancy performances, but its key elements
actually pop up in everyday life. Take the libretto
—it’s basically the script of an opera. Just like
writing a speech, crafting a story, or even
structuring a good conversation, a well-written
libretto helps get a message across clearly. Then
there’s the score, which is like a musical
blueprint. It teaches musicians how to follow
notes and rhythms, but it also reminds us how
important timing and coordination are—whether in
music, planning a schedule, or even dancing to a
beat. Now, let’s talk about the aria—that big
emotional solo moment. Ever poured your heart
out in a speech, a song, or even just a heartfelt
conversation? That’s your aria! It builds
confidence and helps express emotions in a
powerful way. And then there’s recitative, that
speech-like singing that moves the story along.
It’s a lot like storytelling, debate, or even just
keeping a conversation flowing naturally. opera
isn’t just about dramatic costumes and high notes
—it actually teaches us how to communicate,
express ourselves, and stay in sync with the
world around us. Got it, class?
