 feel comfortable with their new class.
● establish class rules together.

Resources
A4 sheets

ICT links

Introduction/Opening of lesson: (10min)

The teacher will warmly welcome the students in their new class and will introduce herself. Have a
brief discussion on being away from school, missing friends and teachers.

To break the ice and make the students comfortable, they will be involved in some interesting ice
breaker games. After an initial introduction, tell students you want to learn more about them by
playing the game “Add a Simile or Metaphor.” Model the example by Introducing yourself: ‘When I
go out on a hot day, I turn as red as a tomato’ (simile) or ‘I turn into a tomato when I go out on a
hot day’ (metaphor). Invite students to introduce themselves using the same method.

Development: (25+ 5min)

The students will also be eager to find out more about their new teacher. Play the game “Two
truths and a lie.” Write three sentences about yourself on a board: one of the statements should be
false while two should be true. The students will be asked to guess which one is the lie. For
example,
1. I have a parrot named Smash.

2. I have been to Karachi numerous times.

3. I can play guitar.

Tell the students to frame and ask eight to ten questions to detect the lie. Avoid direct questions.
Frame the first question yourself as a sample, ‘Have you visited any other city in Pakistan?’ ‘Are you
into music?’ ‘Are you an animal lover?’ Answer with a ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ Once everyone has guessed,
reveal the lie. A couple of students may volunteer to share three sentences and others will continue
the game.

Methodology: (30min)
After playing the game, ask the students:

“How do you take care of your stuff at home?” “How do you

behave at home (with elders)?

After taking their response, establish some “ Class Rules” with the students. Have a discussion and
ask everyone, “Do you agree with this rule?”

Ask them to mention the class rules they religiously followed last year and the ones which were
extremely difficult to follow. Devise a strategy together to ensure these rules (the ones which were
extremely difficult to follow) are obeyed from Day 1. For example, set some incentives/rewards for
the best behaviour students (Student of the Week, Class Prefect etc) and share the rules with the
students.

Discuss and show the books which will be used in the first term. Ask the students to always keep
their first term books and copies next to them before class. Additionally, encourage the use of
dictionary and thesaurus. Tell the students to invest in a good one.

Plenary: (5min)
Teacher will give students one minute to write down about their feelings :

How do you feel about the day (so far)?

Remind the students it’s a joint effort and whenever they feel down or stressed out, they may take
teacher’s permission to take a short break.
