Data on the daily number of new reported COVID-19 cases and deaths by EU/EEA country

A downloadable data file is updated every Thursday and contains the latest available public
data on COVID-19.
 Each row/entry contains the number of new cases and deaths reported per day and per
country in the EU/EEA.
 The data is available in various formats including Excel (.xlsx) and CSV (.csv).
 There is a “data dictionary” that provides an overview of the data fields in the file.

 There is information about how the data is collected.

1. Become familiar with the data:


a. Download the file in the format (.xlsx or .csv) into Excel.
b. Review the data dictionary.
c. Review the information about how the data is collected and processed.
2. What type of data (discrete or continuous) are represented by the following data columns?

3. Consider the data in the data set.
a. What should be the format or default for the data in each column (field)?
b. Is the pattern consistent across each column (e.g., day)?
c. Is the dateRep column format was you expected? What format is used to display
the date?
d. Are any of the columns (fields) redundant as they essentially do not provide more
information than that provided by other columns?
4. For each country
a. Create a chart displaying the daily number of cases over time (e.g., run chart, control
chart, or other chart that is appropriate).
b. Create a chart displaying the daily number of deaths over time (e.g., run chart,
control chart, or other chart that is appropriate).
c. How can we total up the monthly number of cases and deaths by country?
d. Since each country has a different population size how can we use population data
in order to better compare each country in terms of frequency of the number of
cases or deaths? Example, some countries estimate the number of cases or deaths
per 100,000 population size.
5. How do the countries compare in terms of cases or deaths?
a. Which countries, if any, are improving over time and which countries, if any, seem to
doing worse over time?
b. If we wanted to compare Eastern Europe to Western Europe how could we do so?

Questions for you to consider separate from this assignment.

 If you enter 2 of your credit cards in Excel without including the spaces what happens to
the credit card numbers?
o What type of data is a credit card number?
o What is an appropriate data format for entering the credit card number?
 Enter your birthdate into Excel. If you know your time of birth include that, too.
o How do you calculate how many years old you are?
o How do you calculate how many days old you are?
o If you know the time you were born on your birthday, how would you calculate
how many minutes old you are?
