An Auteurs Message
Literature Review
For this Dissertation I will be looking into various types of sources that support
or counter my thesis argument to help it develop and strengthen.
Initially I will look into essays, academic papers and books that cover similar
topics, such as;
-John Berger’s Ways of Seeing, is an essay that explores how art conveys
meaning in relation to social and cultural structures. In this essay John Berger
argues that all art carries a deeper political argument whether it’s intentional or
not. It also insinuates that auteurs, as cultural leaders, have the platform to
make conscious statements that resonate universally.
- World Economic Forum’s article on “Why art has the power to change the
world” is an article written by Olafur Eliasson where he argues that art helps
us grow and develop a better sense of community in regards to facing global
struggles.
- The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, Volume 69, Issue 4, November
2011, Pages 355–365 in where the journal discusses on Artistic Freedom and
Moral Rights in Contemporary Art
- In Susan Sontag’s “Regarding the Pain of Others”, Susan examines how
images shape public perception of suffering and conflict. She then sparks the
argument of whether representing pain can inspire action or merely
desensitize viewers.
- The book written by Bell Hooks “Art on My Mind: Visual Politics” is a
collection of essays where Hooks “examines the way race, sex and class
shape who makes art, how it sells and who values it, while questioning how
art can be instrumental for Black liberation.” (The New York Times)
I also seek to analyze Films relevant to the topic and how the auteurs of each
respective film influenced my statement. The films I look to analyze are;
- Parasite by Bong Joon-Ho is a Drama that criticizes class structures and the
results of these global inequalities.
-Snow Piercer also by Bong Joon-Ho is a dystopian film that has similar
themes as Parasite but developed in a different way.
- Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan is a historical biopic that dives into the
life of Robert Oppenheimer and the moral struggles and dilemmas he faced
before, during and after the creation of the atomic bomb.
- Get Out by Jordan Peele is a horror drama that speaks out on the problems
about systemic discrimination.
- Children of Men by Alfonso Cuarón is a dystopian film that reflects the
fragility of our current society expanding on themes like xenophobia, the
meaning of life.
- Apocalypse Now by Francis Ford Coppola retreats the senselessness of war
through the scope of the vietnam war.
- Wall-E is a kids film that speaks about the struggles and consequences of
extreme global warming.
