An Auteurs Message

Filmmaking is the art of creating motion pictures by combining various

elements and forms of artistic expression such as visual storytelling, sound
design, storytelling, editing, visual composition etc. Kathryn Bigelow describes
directing as being the conductor of an orchestra, implying the directors are
only meant to guide and inspire the cast of talents.
And there are also directors who are considered Auteurs who are
characterized by the way they elevate any piece of art with their own personal
philosophy and creativeness. The term auteur was born in France and
according to Master Class Articles “the word auteur is used to describe a
director who exerts a high level of control across all aspects of a film.”
According to Studio Binder’s article on The Auteur Theory in film, “an auteur is
a filmmaker whose individual style and complete control over all elements of
production give a film its personal and unique stamp.”
Auteurs complete control over film productions and other major pieces makes
them critically exposed to enormous audiences like Oppenheimer where
Nielsen reported that the film recorded 821 million minutes of viewing during
its first week of streaming on Peacock, and that's excluding the viewing time in
theatres. This is why it’s undeniable the effect an auteur may have on the
masses, and which is why in my Dissertation by Practice I’ll make the case of
why An auteur’s responsibility extends beyond personal expression to
addressing universal issues that resonate with global audiences.
Filmmaking is the art of creating motion pictures by combining various
elements and forms of artistic expression such as visual storytelling, sound
design, storytelling, editing, visual composition etc. Kathryn Bigelo describes
directing as being the conductor of an orchestra, implying the directors are
only meant to guide and inspire the cast of talents. Yet in films we can also
find “Auteurs”. Alfred Hitchcock and Martin Scorsese are considered auteurs
for the way they elevate any piece of art with their own personal philosophy
and creativeness.
And while filmmaking will always be a collaborative effort, auteurs are able to
leave their mark on history by the way they display their creative vision
through any possible medium.
The Director François Truffaut explains that “auteur films are not only for mere
entertainment but are meant to carry a deeper meaning.” This is something I
believe any artist should aspire to do, as I believe art is meant to inspire and
promote better ways of thinking and living. And that's the reason I would like to
direct. Being a director gives an individual a major platform to reach up to
millions of other people. Having such power must come at the cost of equal
responsibilities. I want to study and explore human nature and behaviour and
be able to inspire others.
The lack of empathy on ongrowing problems throughout the world is what
brings relevance to this question. With ongoing wars, famines, extreme
corporate capitalism, rising inequality, etc. our attention is always driven
elsewhere. Like what new phone are we buying or what celebrity scandal is
popping up at the moment. All of these distractions drift our focus away from
the real struggles that occur in society. Therefore it is our responsibility as
creatives to bring attention to these issues. We have a platform that reaches
millions of people worldwide. And while it is not in our ability to create reforms
or to move politicians, we do have the power to broadcast an opinion or a
feeling that resonates with people who are willing to force change.

Literature Review

For this Dissertation I will be looking into various types of sources that support
or counter my thesis argument to help it develop and strengthen.
Initially I will look into essays, academic papers and books that cover similar
topics, such as;
-John Berger’s Ways of Seeing, is an essay that explores how art conveys
meaning in relation to social and cultural structures. In this essay John Berger
argues that all art carries a deeper political argument whether it’s intentional or
not. It also insinuates that auteurs, as cultural leaders, have the platform to
make conscious statements that resonate universally.
- World Economic Forum’s article on “Why art has the power to change the
world” is an article written by Olafur Eliasson where he argues that art helps
us grow and develop a better sense of community in regards to facing global
struggles.
- The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, Volume 69, Issue 4, November
2011, Pages 355–365 in where the journal discusses on Artistic Freedom and
Moral Rights in Contemporary Art
- In Susan Sontag’s “Regarding the Pain of Others”, Susan examines how
images shape public perception of suffering and conflict. She then sparks the
argument of whether representing pain can inspire action or merely
desensitize viewers.
- The book written by Bell Hooks “Art on My Mind: Visual Politics” is a
collection of essays where Hooks “examines the way race, sex and class
shape who makes art, how it sells and who values it, while questioning how
art can be instrumental for Black liberation.” (The New York Times)

I also seek to analyze Films relevant to the topic and how the auteurs of each
respective film influenced my statement. The films I look to analyze are;
- Parasite by Bong Joon-Ho is a Drama that criticizes class structures and the
results of these global inequalities.
-Snow Piercer also by Bong Joon-Ho is a dystopian film that has similar
themes as Parasite but developed in a different way.
- Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan is a historical biopic that dives into the
life of Robert Oppenheimer and the moral struggles and dilemmas he faced
before, during and after the creation of the atomic bomb.
- Get Out by Jordan Peele is a horror drama that speaks out on the problems
about systemic discrimination.
- Children of Men by Alfonso Cuarón is a dystopian film that reflects the
fragility of our current society expanding on themes like xenophobia, the
meaning of life.
- Apocalypse Now by Francis Ford Coppola retreats the senselessness of war
through the scope of the vietnam war.
- Wall-E is a kids film that speaks about the struggles and consequences of
extreme global warming.

And to be able to contextualize more in depth I would also like to examine

other artists and pieces of art from other mediums like; Frida Calo, Fernando
Botero, Leonardo Davinci, The Birth of Venus, etc.
Research Questions

- How factually accurate should a film be?

- What topics are of relevance?
- How should an argument be made?
- How relevant is the film industry in today’s world?
- Is there such a thing as artistic freedom?
- What type of films move people?

Methodology.

To be able to answer the research questions I’ll be employing qualitative

research methodology. This decision comes from the principle that the thesis
statement comes from a place of moral thought and therefore a quantitative
research methodology wouldn’t be suitable to help elaborate the moral topics
that are being discussed within the scope of this research.
Therefore the use of personal notes from famous directors or people involved
in the industry will be more useful to gain a better insight and understanding of
the themes, and will subsequently lead to more complete and better guided
answers. So I will be looking at a list of directors from different backgrounds
and cultures and how they take on general global issues and how their works
are both influenced by society and how they influence it. The list of pieces of
work is also broad in the sense of the topics of relevance they cover.
With these thoughts in mind coming to an objective conclusion is close to
impossible as this is a subjective matter. Therefore more than an objective
answer this essay attempts to achieve a better informed and knowledgeable
conclusion.
