Research Proposal

This research proposal examines the impact of women's illiteracy on the success of immunization programs for children, highlighting how limited knowledge and access contribute to lower immunization rates. It aims to identify reasons for mothers' refusal to immunize their children and posits that higher illiteracy levels correlate with decreased immunization coverage. The study will utilize a descriptive survey design, targeting nurses and antenatal mothers, with data collected through questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics.

RESEARCH PROPOSAL:

Introduction /Literature Review

The effects of illiteracy among women on the success of immunization programs for children are
multifaceted and interconnected. Limited awareness, barriers to access, misconceptions,
difficulties in following immunization schedules, limited decision-making power, and
intergenerational impact all contribute to lower immunization rates among children of illiterate
mothers. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive strategies that focus on improving
literacy rates among women, increasing access to healthcare services, providing culturally
appropriate information about immunizations, and empowering women to make informed
decisions about their children's health.
Literature Review
In Nigeria, educational level of mothers is not up to the mark unlike in the developed countries.
Unfortunately, despite a lot of effort by the government to eradicate childhood diseases like
polio, measles, tetanus, whooping cough etc. the challenges still remains. However, Nigeria was
recently declared polio free by the United Nations (GIVS 2018). According to Awosika (2012), the
main reason behind these problems is the lack of public awareness about the importance of
immunization and lack of education.
Knowledge is an important factor influencing immunization. A number of studies indicate that
mothers who have inadequate knowledge about immunization and immunization schedules are
more likely to have children who are not immunized or partially immunized. Marfe (2007)
explains that parents’ knowledge and understanding of immunization is important so health care
providers can provide support. Mothers must receive information on vaccine benefits and risks,
so they can make an informed decision about immunization. Mother’s knowledge affect to a
great extent towards the immunization of their children due to their level of education. Mother’s
knowledge about immunization and their attitudes towards them are likely influence uptake
(Awosika, 2012). Low level of literacy and religion may also alter the knowledge of mothers
towards childhood immunization (Wilson, Baker, Nordstrom, & Legwand, 2008). According to
them most mothers are not aware of the vaccine preventable childhood diseases and as such
avoid immunization programmes.
This research work is an attempt to study the effects of illiteracy among women on the success
of immunization on children. The purpose of this study is to:
 To find out why mothers refused to bring their children for immunization
 To know why some mothers started but refuse to complete the normal schedule

Research Hypothesis:

The research hypothesis on the effects of illiteracy among women on the success of immunization
on children posits that:
There is a significant negative relationship between the level of illiteracy among women and the
success of immunization programs for children.
It suggests that higher levels of illiteracy among women are associated with lower rates of
immunization coverage, leading to increased vulnerability to vaccine-preventable diseases among
children.

Explanation:
Illiteracy among women can have various detrimental effects on the success of immunization
programs for children. When women are unable to read or write, they may face challenges in
accessing and understanding information related to immunization schedules, vaccine benefits, and
potential side effects. This lack of knowledge can lead to misconceptions, fear, and hesitancy
towards vaccination, resulting in lower rates of immunization coverage.

Children who are not adequately vaccinated are at a higher risk of contracting vaccine-preventable
diseases such as measles, polio, diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus. These diseases can cause severe
illness, long-term disabilities, and even death. Additionally, low immunization rates among a
population can lead to outbreaks and the spread of infectious diseases within communities.
Research Design
Research design
The research design used in this study is descriptive survey. This is basically analytical and it
sought to evaluate the effects of illiteracy among women on the success of immunization on
children in Central Hospital Agbor, Delta State.
Target population
The target population that was used for this study was the nurses and antenatal mothers in
Central Hospital Agbor.
Instrument for data collection
The data in this study was collected using questionnaire developed by the researcher from the
variable in the literature reviewed.
Statistical Design/Analysis Plan
Method of data collection
The researcher obtained a letter of introduction from the school alongside with the student
information introducing the research. A respondent consent was obtained after some explanation
about the purpose of the study.
Method of data analysis
A descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data collected. Descriptive statistics in
the form of frequencies and percentage rate
effects of illiteracy among women on the success of immunization on children

PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH IMMUNIZATION OF CHILDREN AMONG THE ILLITERATE MOTHERS IN

ESAN WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

ABSTRACT

This study is attempted to provide a general information and knowledge about the problems associated
with immunization among illiterate mother in Esan West Local Government Area from the findings, it
was observed that ignorance and inability of mothers to get their child immunized lead to death of
children so government area advised to explain the main importance of immunization to mothers in
order to increase the rate of immunization.
