Assignment 1: Basics of Computer

System
1. What is a Computer?
A computer is an electronic machine that accepts data, processes it, and gives output in the
form of useful information. It follows instructions given by the user through programs and
works at a very high speed with great accuracy.

2. Block Diagram of a Computer System:

[Input Unit] → [CPU (Control Unit + ALU) + Memory] → [Output Unit]

3. Basic Components of a Computer System:

i. Input Unit
Input unit takes data from the user and converts it into a form the computer understands
(binary).
Examples: Keyboard, Mouse, Scanner.

ii. Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The CPU is called the brain of the computer. It has two main parts:
- Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU): Performs arithmetic and logical operations.
- Control Unit: Controls the operations of all parts of the computer.

iii. Memory Unit

Memory stores data and instructions temporarily or permanently.
Types:
- RAM (Random Access Memory) – Temporary memory
- ROM (Read Only Memory) – Permanent memory

iv. Output Unit

It shows the result after processing.
Examples: Monitor, Printer, Speakers.

4. Difference between GUI and CUI:

Feature GUI (Graphical User CUI (Character User
Interface) Interface)

Interface Style Uses icons, buttons, images Uses text and commands
only

User Friendly Easy to use Harder to use for beginners

Example Windows OS, Android MS-DOS, Linux terminal

5. Conclusion
The computer system is made of input, output, processing, and memory units.
Understanding these basic parts helps us learn how a computer performs tasks.
