The Case of the Desert Bones
Materials Needed:
❑ Scissors
❑ Glue
❑ Copies of the following: Student Instruction Sheet, DNA Profile List,
DNA Profile Student Printable, & Lab Analysis Questions (I suggest
having EVERY student complete individually, even if you have the
students collaborate as a partnership or lab group.)
Instructions:
❑ Provide each student with a lab packet (see materials list), a pair of scissors,
and glue.
❑ The students will read and follow the instructions on their lab sheet- basically,
they will use restriction enzymes (aka scissors) to cut the DNA sequence of 3
missing persons and skeletal remains found in the desert.
❑ After “cutting” the DNA sequence, they will create a DNA profile by gluing
the DNA fragments onto a DNA profile sheet.
❑ Once they have the DNA profile of each person involved, they will be able to
compare these results to the DNA profile of the skeletal remains of the victim.
❑ Lastly, have the students complete the lab analysis questions.
❑ I have provided an answer key for easy grading!
