Day 4: Focus: Vowel Digraphs aw- as in paw and au as in Autumn
Read the following sentence to your child:
The jaunty grasshopper saw the awesome ants working hard
during the Autumn months. Read the words with aw and au
sounds loudly (bolded words).
Ask the following questions:
▪ Which words did I say the loudest?
▪ Which sound did you hear in all the words?
▪ In the word saw where did you hear the aw- sound.
▪ In the word jaunty where did you hear the au- sound?
▪ In the word awesome where did you hear the aw sound?
▪ Next, ask them to write all the words on the little cards. They
read and sound the word and draw a picture next to each

word. Ask them to make a sentence with each word and if
they are unsure of the meaning or spelling of words they may
use dictionaries.
