Version 1.4
Instructions for Firmware Upgrade

Instructions for Upgrading

PACSystems RX3i CPU Modules
With New Firmware via USB Flash Drive
Introduction
The PACSystems RX3iTM CPU has operating firmware stored in FLASH memory. RX3i CPUs equipped with USB
ports are capable of updating the stored operating firmware from a USB flash drive through the USB port with no
other outside software.
NOTE: The instructions provided outline a specific procedure that MUST be followed in sequence. If the
procedure for some reason is not followed, please contact the Emerson Support for help in upgrading the PLC
CPU.
PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY PRIOR TO STARTING THE UPDATE PROCEDURE.

Before You Begin

1. If OEM Protection in your PACSystems RX3i CPU is Locked, upgrades can be performed only by personnel
who have the OEM Key. If you are an end user, please contact your OEM to arrange for a firmware upgrade.
2. The revision of the Important Product Information (IPI) document that applies to this firmware upgrade is
included in this upgrade kit. Please read the IPI to understand how the changes in this upgrade will impact
your application.

What You Will Need

1. This firmware upgrade kit.
2. A blank USB flash drive (2.0 A-type).
3. A Windows PC running Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7:
• If your upgrade kit is a ZIP file, its contents must be extracted using Windows Explorer in Windows
XP/Vista, a commercial application such as WinZip or PKZIP® for Windows, or a freeware application
such as 7-Zip or FreeZip. Configure your ZIP utility to create folders/directories on extraction.
• Proficy Machine Edition PLC Programming Software is required to back up the PLC application before
the upgrade and to restore the application afterward unless application logic, hardware configuration,
initial/forced values, and controller supplemental files are written to flash before starting the upgrade.

 WinZip and PKZIP are registered trademarks of their respective owners.

Firmware Upgrade Instructions

TO INSTALL THE NEW FIRMWARE, PERFORM THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

Section 1: USB Flash Drive Preparation

1. Starting with a blank USB flash drive, prepare the drive by unzipping the upgrade ZIP onto the USB flash
drive. This will add a directory structure matching that shown below on Removable Disk (G:) to the
intended USB flash drive. The “geupdate” folder MUST be in the root directory of the USB flash drive.

Once the structure on the USB flash drive matches the example below, please proceed to Section 2.

Section 2: CPU Update via USB Flash Drive

1. Save or backup any programs or data resident in the PLC CPU before performing the firmware update.
When the operating firmware update is complete, it will be necessary to restore programs and data
resident in the PLC CPU.
2. Power down the PLC to be updated. Disconnect the Energy Pack from the CPU, if so equipped. The
prepared USB flash drive should be available, but not inserted in the CPU USB slot. Open the door just
above the ETHERNET and USB - A RDSD ports and locate the button labeled START.
3. Press and hold the START button. While continuing to hold the START button, power up the PLC. When
the CPU completes its initialization (10-15 seconds), the RDSD LED will begin to blink red. Release the
START button.

4. Insert the prepared USB flash drive in the port labeled USB-A RDSD. Press and release the START
button. The RDSD LED will blink green while the image is being copied to the CPU (15-20 seconds).
When the copy has completed, the RDSD LED will stop blinking, and turn off. NOTE: It is imperative
that power not be disrupted and the USB flash drive not be removed while the image copy is in
progress… irreparable damage could occur to the CPU.

If the RDSD LED does not operate as described above:

a. The RDSD LED will turn solid red if the CPU is unable to read from the USB device. In that case,
power off the CPU and remove the USB flash drive. Prepare a different USB flash drive and
repeat the CPU Update procedure via USB flash drive from the beginning.
b. When the image copy is complete, the RDSD LED may quit blinking and stay solid green. This
indicates that this version of the product firmware image did not change and is OK.
5. Power down the PLC and remove the USB stick. If the Energy Pack was disconnected in step 1,
reconnect it now.
6. Power up the PLC. The PLC will power-up to normal operation with the new upgraded firmware.

Common Failures
1. CPU will not read USB flash drive.
Symptoms: Includes indication update succeeded but the update did not take place, or indication
update fails (red LED).
Correction: Though the RX3i CPU modules with USB capability are compatible with Version 2.0 USB
flash drives, not all drives are made the same. If the CPU has trouble reading the USB flash drive, try
another Version 2.0 USB flash drive (different model and/or different manufacturer).

2. Firmware Update fails.

Symptoms: Firmware update fails indicated by red LED.
Correction: The most common cause for this type of failure is the “geupdate” folder is not in the root
directory of the USB flash drive. If the “geupdate” folder is NOT in the root directory of the USB flash
drive, the CPU update utility will not be able to find it and the update will fail.
