A new drug is proposed to lower total cholesterol. A randomised controlled trial is designed to evaluate the
efficacy of the medication in lowering cholesterol. A total of 52 participants are enrolled in the trial and are
randomly assigned to receive either the new drug or a placebo. The participants do not know which treatment
they are assigned. Each participant is asked to take the assigned treatment for 6 weeks. At the end of 6 weeks,
each patient’s total cholesterol level is measured and the sample statistics are as follows:
Is there statistical evidence of a reduction in mean total cholesterol in patients taking the new drug for 6 weeks

Suppose scientists have hypothesized that a substance V decreases the possibility of infection by the COVID-
19 virus, i.e., it acts as a vaccine. You want to test, in two separate laboratories, if it is really effective. You
gather a number of people (a proper sample of all ages and sex). You apply V on 220 people in Lab-A, 200
people in Lab-B, and a placebo on 200 people. After a year you take a survey and find that, out of the people
who got V in Lab-A, 40 got sick of COVID-19; out of those who got V in Lab-B, 36 got sick; and out of the
people who got the placebo, 50 got sick. Using a χ2χ2 test with a significance level of 10%, what conclusion

Is the following abstract of a paper in proper form? What are the problems?

Abstract: In previous years several theoretical papers discussed if time can be an emergent property
deriving from quantum correlations. Here, to provide insight into how this phenomenon can occur, we present
an experiment that illustrates Page and Wootters’ mechanism of “static” time [1], and Gambini et al. for
subsequent refinements [2].
A static, entangled state between a clock system and the rest of the universe is perceived as evolving
by internal observers that test the correlations between the two subsystems. We implement this mechanism
using an entangled state of the polarization of two photons:
Finally, we derives equation (13) which quantifies the entangled state.

Solution: Week 6, assignments: 1. 1. Suppose you have measured the concentration of a substance in a
solution by taking 25 samples from different parts of a liquid and have obtained the following data (the
figures are in ppm).
1.56,1.58,1.49,1.49,1.48,1.62,1.57,1.46,1.51,1.54,1.47,1.44,1.54,1.46,1.56,1.43,1.51,1.
43,1.52,1.55,1.46,1.44,1.57,1.58,1.48

(a) If you are to report the result in a paper, how will you specify the measured value?( round to four
decimal places)(1)

Ans: Mean ______ (1.5095 to 1.5097), error bar ± ______ (0.0106 to 0.0110)

(b) Define a range in which the “true” value of the concentration must lie with 95% probability.(round to
two decimal places) (1)

Ans: The range is (x to y), x range (1.48,1.49), y range (1.530,1.531)

(c) With what confidence level can you state that the actual value lies in the range 1.5 ppm to 1.5192
ppm? (round to two decimal places) (1)

Ans: range (0.61, 0.63) and (61,63) Both are correct

Model answer:

The mean of the given measurements = 1.5096

Variance = 0.00287

Standard deviation = 0.05473

Number of data points = 25

Therefore standard error of the mean = 0.05473/5 =0.0109

The measured value has to be specified as 1.5096 ± 0.0109

The true value lies with 95% confidence in the range [1.5096 ± 1.96×0.0109] 1.5 and 1.5192 are away
from the mean 1.5096 by ±0.0096, i.e., 0.897 standard deviations. For this z value, the area to the left of
the normal distribution curve is 0.8133. Therefore the area within ±z is (0.8133-0.5)×2 = 0.6266 =
62.66%.

2. A scientist could take only 10 measurements on the molecular weight of a new compound, and the
measured values were 41.8, 42.5, 46.1, 50.1, 48.9, 43.6, 47.3, 44.8, 43.8, 44.2. What is the standard error
in mean?((round to two decimal places) (1)

Ans:0.85-0.87 Do the data provide sufficient evidence to say that the compound’s molecular weight is
less than 46.5? Here “sufficient evidence” implies that the probability that the statement is wrong is less
than 0.01 or 1%. (2)

Ans: No
Model answer:

The mean of the given measurements = 45.31

Variance = 6.73

Standard deviation =2.735

Number of data points = 10

Therefore, standard error of the mean = 2.7351/√10=0.8649

Assuming the actual value to be 58.5, we find the odds of getting a mean value of 45.13.
t=(45.31−46.5)÷(0.0.8649)=-1.449

Degree of freedom = 10-1 = 9 The t-table shows that DoF=9, the critical value of t for 0.01 degree of
significance is -3.25. Therefore the probability of getting an average of 56.75 if the actual value is 46.5 or
higher is greater than 1%. So there is not enough evidence that the compound’s actual molecular weight
is less than 58.5.
Solution:

Week 7, assignments:

1. Suppose there are two strains in a species of bacteria – one benign and the other

virulent. You have read a paper that says more than 32% of the bacteria are virulent.

You have repeated the experiment and cultured the bacteria. Then you pick up a bit of

the culture and find 200 bacteria in it. On closer inspection, you find that 76 of them are

of the virulent strain. Does your observation support the report in the paper with a 95%

level of confidence? What was the value of z?(Round upto 2 decimal places)

(1+2)

Ans: Yes. The value of z=1.81 to 1.82

Model answer:

Null hypothesis H0 : p≤0.32, Alternative hypothesis H1: p>0.32

Assume the highest value of the null hypothesis, p=0.32. If this is true, what is the

probability of getting 76/200=0.38 in the experiment? If the probability is less than 5%,

we reject the null.

Both 0.32×200 and 0.68×200 are bigger than 10; so the sampling distribution of

proportions will be approximately a normal distribution with a mean of 0.32 and a

standard deviation of

√(p(1-p)/n) = √(0.32(1-0.32)/200) = 0.03298

Since we have got the value of 0.38, z=(0.38-0.32)/0.03298=1.82

For this value of z, the area to the left of the normal distribution is 0.9656

Therefore, if the null hypothesis is true, the probability of finding a value of 0.37 is

1-0.9656=0.0344

Since this is less than 5%, we can reject the null hypothesis.

So our experiment does support the result reported in the paper.

2. Find the minimum, the median (Q2), lower quartile (Q1), upper quartile (Q3), and the

maximum for the following data obtained in an experiment. Identify if there is any outlier

and draw a box-and-whisker plot.

[88, 86, 74, 60, 56, 19, 53, 73, 78, 70, 80, 24, 85, 68, 75]
What is the mean value that you can report? (Round upto 2 decimal places)

(½×6)

Ans: Minimum=24, Q1=56, Q2=73, Q3=79, maximum = 88, Mean = (69.28,69.29)

Model answer:

Arranging the numbers in ascending order, we get

19, 24, 53, 56, 60, 68, 70, 73, 74, 75, 78, 80, 85, 86, 88

There are 15 numbers, and so the median is the 8th number: 73.

The median of the numbers below 73 is the 4th number: 56

The median of the numbers above 73 is the 12th number: 80

So, the inter-quartile range is 80-56=24

The lowest of the acceptable range is 56-1.5×24=20

The highest of the acceptable range is 80+1.5×24=116

Since 19 is less than 20, it is identified as an outlier. There is no outlier on the higher

side. So the quartiles become minimum=24, Q1=56, Q2=73, Q3=80, maximum = 88.

The mean value calculated excluding the outlier is 69.2857

3. You have conducted an experiment to measure two values x and y, and have

y values: mean=6.6, SD=0.28, number of data points: 49

(a) Calculate the extremities of the error bars in x and y.

(b) Calculate the estimated values of the quantities x+y, xy, and ln(x), including the error

bars. (2)

(c) Define a range of x in which the “true” value of x must lie with 99% probability.

(1)

(Round all answer upto 2 decimal places)

Ans:

(a) The lower limit of the error-bar in x is ____ (4.7,4.75), and the upper limit is ____

(4.8,4.9).
The lower limit of the error-bar in y is ____ (6.5,6.57), and the upper limit is ____

(6.6,6.7)

(b) x+y : ____ ± ____ (11.4) (0.07, 0.08)

xy : ____ ± ____ (31.6,31.7) (0.40, 0.45)

ln(x) : ____ ± ____ (1.5,1.6) (0.01, 0.02)

(c) The lower limit is (4.64,4.65) and the upper limit is (4.95, 4.96).

Model answer:

(a) x has to be specified as 4.8±0.36/√36=4.8±0.06. Therefore the extremities are 4.74

and 4.86.

y has to be specified as 6.6±0.28/√49=6.6±0.04. Therefore the extremities are 6.56 and

6.64.

(b) x+y : mean = 4.8+6.6=11.4, SE= √(0.06^2+0.04^2)=0.0721

xy : mean = 4.8×6.6=31.68, SE= 31.68×√(0.06/4.8)^2+(0.04/6.6)^2 = 0.44352

ln(x) : mean = ln(4.8) = 1.569, SE = dln(x)/dx × 0.068 = 1/ 4..8 × 0.06 = 0.0125

(c) The true value of x lies in the range 4.8±2.58×0.06 = (4.6452,4.9548) with 99%

Week 8, assignments:

1. In a hypothesis testing experiment, you have collected data from two populations

(you may think of anything from your discipline representing the populations). You have

obtained the sample mean and standard deviation as:

Population A: nA = 52, x̄ A = 81.7, sA = 5.65

Population B: nB = 47, x̄ B = 79.5, sB = 4.95

If the hypotheses can be stated as H0 : µA = µB and H1 : µA > µB , obtain the test

statistic (upto 3 decimal places) and check if there enough ground for rejecting the null

hypothesis. (1+1)

Ans: Test statistic z= ____ (2.06,2.068). Yes, the null hypothesis can be rejected.

Model answer:

Since the number of samples in each category is > 25, we should apply the z test.

The estimated standard error is √(5.65^2/52 + 4.95^2/47) = 1.065

The test statistic is z= (81.7-79.5)/1.065 = 2.066

Since the z value is greater than 1.96, the null hypothesis can be rejected with 95%

confidence.

2. A new drug is proposed to lower total cholesterol. A randomised controlled trial is

designed to evaluate the efficacy of the medication in lowering cholesterol. A total of 52

participants are enrolled in the trial and are randomly assigned to receive either the new

drug or a placebo. The participants do not know which treatment they are assigned.

Each participant is asked to take the assigned treatment for 6 weeks. At the end of 6

weeks, each patient’s total cholesterol level is measured and the sample statistics are

as follows:

Treatment Sample size Mean Standard deviation

New drug 32 227.4 29.9

Placebo 28 218.6 28.2

Is there statistical evidence of a reduction in mean total cholesterol in patients taking the
new drug for 6 weeks as compared to participants taking a placebo? Obtain the test

statistic(up to 3 decimal places) and

(1+1)

Answer: Test statistic Z = _____ (1.172, 1.173)

The new drug does/doesn’t have an effect on one’s total cholesterol level.

Model answer:

Null hypothesis H0: μcontrol = μexperiment , Alternative hypothesis H1: μcontrol >

μexperiment

The estimated standard error is √(28.2^2/28 + 29.9^2/32) = 7.506

The test statistic is z= (227.4-218.6)/7.506 = 1.172

Since the z value is less than 1.96, the null hypothesis can not be rejected with 95%

confidence.

3. Suppose scientists have hypothesized that a substance V decreases the possibility of

infection by the COVID-19 virus, i.e., it acts as a vaccine. You want to test, in two

separate laboratories, if it is really effective. You gather a number of people (a proper

sample of all ages and sex). You apply V on 220 people in Lab-A, 200 people in Lab-B,

and a placebo on 200 people. After a year you take a survey and find that, out of the

people who got V in Lab-A, 40 got sick of COVID-19; out of those who got V in Lab-B,

36 got sick; and out of the people who got the placebo, 50 got sick. Using a χ2 test with

a significance level of 10%, what conclusion can you reach regarding the efficacy of the

vaccine? The answer should give the test statistic and the χ2 value needed to reject the

null hypothesis.(Round all the answer upto 3 decimal)

Ans: χ2 = ___ (10.68, 10.683)

(2)

The value required to reject the null hypothesis: ____ (4.604, 4.606) (1)

Conclusion: The proposed vaccine has an effect on the disease. (1)

Model answer:

Null hypothesis H0: V has no effect on the possibility of sickness due to COVID-19

Alternative hypothesis H1: V is effective as a vaccine

Among 220 who has placebo , 50 got sick. The expected probability of getting sick is

50/200=0.25

Contingency table:

Sick Not sick Total

Control (placebo applied) 50 150 200

Expected 50 150

Experimental (in Lab-A) 40 180 220

Expected 55 165

Experimental (in Lab-B) 36 164 200

Expected 50 150

Total 136 504 640

Out of a total of 380 people, 76 got sick. Probability 136/640=0.21. If the null hypothesis

is correct, the same probability should apply to all categories. This gives the expected

values. The data show that those who got the vaccine did have a lower number of

infection than expected. But can that be accounted by random fluctuations? To check

we obtain the test statistic

χ2= (40-55)^2/55 + (180-165)^2/165 + (36-50)^2/50 + (164-150)^2/150

=10.6812

The degree of freedom is (3-1)×(2-1)=2

The χ2 table shows that for DoF=2 and level of significance 0.1, the χ2 value needed to

reject the null hypothesis is 4.605. Since the obtained value is greater that, we can

reject the null hypothesis.
