Lab 1 Photosynthesis
Lab 1 Photosynthesis
2: Photosynthesis
Objective: To investigate how distinct colors (wavelengths) of light affect the rate of photosynthesis in
Elodea, using the amount of oxygen gas produced as an indicator.
1 x 500 mL beaker
1 test tube
Stirring rod
Scissors
Tape
Safety Reminders:
Set up the light stations each with both: blue, and green.
3. Place 2–3 Elodea leaves into the narrow end of the funnel (cut to fit if needed).
5. Fill a test tube completely with water. Invert it while submerged and place it over the funnel stem
without trapping air.
7. Wrap the blue and green cellophane around each beaker. Tape securely.
9. Begin timing.
10. Count and record the number of bubbles produced every 5 minutes.

12. Share your data with the class for group comparison.
1. Why does chlorophyll reflect green light while absorbing other wavelengths like blue?
2. How does the absorption of blue light compare to green light in terms of energy efficiency for
photosynthesis?
3. Which filter color (blue or green) resulted in a higher rate of photosynthesis in your experiment?
Why?
5. How might this experiment be applied to improve artificial lighting for indoor plant growth?
Conclusion: Write 2–3 sentences summarizing what you learned from this lab:
