hw00_Exercise_tensor notation

The document outlines exercises for a course on Micromechanics, focusing on mathematical preliminaries related to tensors and determinants. It includes problems that require proving identities, showing properties of tensors, and manipulating tensor equations. The exercises emphasize understanding the relationships between different tensor operations and their implications in mechanical engineering.

Exercises on Mathematical Preliminaries

Problem 1: (a) Given εijkTjk = 0, show that Tij = Tji. (b) Show that δijεijk = 0. The εijk is
permutation.

Problem 2: Verify the ε-δ identity: εijkεipq = δjpδkq – δjqδkp. Then use this identity to show that
(a) εilmεjlm = 2 δij, (b) εijkεijk = 6, (c) a×(b×c) = (a ∙ c)b – (a ∙ b)c, ∀a, b, c ∈ Euclidean space.
[Hint: Do not work out all 34=81 possibilities; just check for a few values of i, j, k, p, q.]

Problem 3: Show that det[Aij] = εijkAi1Aj2Ak3 = εijkA1iA2jA3k.

Problem 4: Find the matrix of the tensor T if Te1 = 2e1 + e3, Te2 = e2 + 3e3, Te3 = – e1 + 3e2,

Problem 5: (a) Show that for any 2nd-order tensor T there is Tij = Sij + Aij where Sij = (Tij +
Tji)/2 and Aij = (Tij – Tji)/2, with Sij = Sji and Aij = – Aji. (b) Show that SijAij = 0.

Problem 6: Prove that (a) u ∙ v = ui′vi′ = ujvj; (b) T : S = Tij′Sij′ = TklSkl; (c) trT = Tii = Tjj′.

Problem 7: Show that (a) (AB)T = BTAT; (b) (AB)–1 = B–1A–1; (c) (A–1)T = (AT)–1.

Problem 8: Prove that (a) det(u⊗v) = 0; (b) det(W) = 0, where W = (T – TT)/2.

Problem 9: Show that (a) (a⊗b)T = b⊗a; (b) A(u⊗v) = (Au)⊗v; (c) (u⊗v)A = u⊗(ATv); (d)
(a⊗b)(c⊗d) = (b ∙ c)a⊗d.
