OPERATION ON FUNCTIONS Example 2:

The Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Law (TRAIN Law),
Given the functions: officially designated as Republic Act No. 10963, is the initial package
𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 − 5 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 9 of the Comprehensive Tax Reform Program (CTRP) signed into law
by President Rodrigo Duterte on December 19, 2017. The table
(𝑓 + 𝑔)(𝑥) = (𝑓 + 𝑔)(3) = below is the new TRAIN law tax rates.

(𝑓 − 𝑔)(𝑥) = (𝑓 − 𝑔)(3) =

Sample Questions:
(𝑓 × 𝑔)(𝑥) = (𝑓 × 𝑔)(3) =
a. If your annual income is P270,000, how much is your annual tax?

Excess: 270,000 – 250,000 = 20,000

20% of excess: 20,000 (.20) = 4,000
(𝑓 ÷ 𝑔)(𝑥) = (𝑓 ÷ 𝑔)(3) =
b. If your annual income is P1,300,000, how much is your annual
tax?

(𝑓 ∘ 𝑔)(𝑥) = (𝑓 ∘ 𝑔)(3) = Excess: 1,300,000 – 800,000 = 500,000

30% of excess: 500,000 (.30) = 150,000
P130,000 + 150,000= 280,000

PIECEWISE FUNCTIONS

In writing a piecewise function, read the problem carefully and

underline the important information. Then create a function out of it.

Example 1:
Venus and Justine went to Bacolod City for Masskara and booked a
room at L’Fisher Hotel. L’Fisher Hotel charges P2000 for a non-
overnight room that can be used for the first 5 hours from 2 PM to 6
PM. The extra hours used in excess is charged at P200 per hour.
Write a piecewise function C(x) where C is the cost of the overall stay
at x number of hours?

2,000 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≤ 5
𝐶(𝑥) {
2,000 + 200(𝑥 − 5) 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 5

INVERSE FUNCTIONS
𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 + 5

Step 1 - Replace 𝑓(𝑥) with 𝑦. 𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 5

Exponential decay:
