FUNCTIONS AND
RELATIONS
Lesson 1

4
RELATION
A RELATION is a set of ordered pairs. The
set of all the first coordinates is called the
domain of the relation. The set of all the
second coordinates is called the range of
a relation.

5
Examples of Relations:
{ (1,4), (2,5), { (4,2), (4,-2), { (1,a), (1,b),
(3,6), (4,8) } (9,3), (9,3) } (1,c), (1,d) }
FUNCTION
A FUNCTION is a relation in which
element of the domain corresponds
to exactly one element of the range.

7
Examples of Functions:
{ (1,4), (2,5), (3,6), { (4,2), (-4,-2), (9,3), (-9,-3)
(4,8) } }
Determine if the following relations
represent a function:

1. { (q,0), (w,1), (e,2), (t,3) }

2. { (-1,-2), (0,-2), (1,-2), (2,-2) }

3. { (1,0), (1,1), (1,2), (1,-2) }

4. { (x,3), (y,4), (z,3), (w,4) }

9
Determine if the following relations
represent a function:

10
By using the vertical line test, a graph represents
a function if and only if each vertical line
intersects the graph at most ONCE.

11
Example 1:
Find the domain of the function given the equation at 0 < 𝑥 < 4
𝑓 𝑥 =𝑥+4

Example 2:
Find the domain of the function given the equation at 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 4
𝑓 𝑥 =𝑥+2
Example 3:
Find the domain of the function given the equation at −2 < 𝑥 ≤ 1
𝑓 𝑥 =𝑥−2

Example 4:
Find the domain of the function given the equation at 0 ≤ 𝑥 < 4
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥! + 4
Functions can be used to model real situations.

Identifying an appropriate function model will lead to

a better understanding of various phenomena.
Example 1:

In the Philippines, 12% Value Added Tax or VAT

applies to practically all sales of services and imports,
as well as to the sale, barter, exchange, or lease of
goods or properties (tangible or intangible). If you
purchased an amount 𝒙 of goods from a grocery store,
determine the function 𝑽 for the amount of VAT that you
will pay. How much is the VAT if your total purchase is
at ₽500? ₽1,000? ₽1,500?
15
Example 2:

In Bacolod City, the average per hour rate that an

internet café charges is at ₽20/hour. Determine the
function 𝑪 for the cost of consuming 𝒙 number of hours.
How much will a student pay if he used 2.5 hours to
accomplish his school project? 3 hours? 6 hours?

Example 1:

The price function 𝑝 𝑥 = 640 − 0.2𝑥 represents the

price for which you can sell 𝑥 printed shirts. What must
be the price of the shirt for the first three entries in the
table?

The function 𝐶 described by 𝐶 𝐹 = (𝐹 − 32) gives
"
the Celcius temperature corresponding to the Farenheit
temperature 𝐹 .

a. Find the Celcius temperature equivalent to 14°𝐹.

b. Find the Celcius temperature equivalent to 68°𝐹.
