Assignment 2025

The assignment for ECE5882/6882 involves designing and simulating a Cascode Amplifier and an oscillator circuit using either Colpitts or Hartley configurations. Students are required to calculate voltage gain, bias transistors, analyze frequency response, and report on various performance metrics. The submission deadline is April 15, with specific requirements for circuit schematics and simulation results.

Note that Q1 and Q2 should be same transistors.

Cascode Amplifier is commonly used as an analog and RF amplifier for many

applications. Design and simulate the amplifier such that the gain will be equal or more
than 10 dB at an operating frequency equal or higher than 100 MHz. Find the followings:

1) 1 pts. Present an expression for the low-frequency voltage gain, Av = vout/vin.

calculate the output voltage if the input voltage (vi) is 1 mV.
2) 1 pts. Bias transistors using one of current mirror topologies. Provide DC
operating points from simulation. Find the current IC1.
3) 1 pts. Use AC analysis, plot the gain (vout/vin). Discuss low-frequency frequency
gains by considering several points at low frequencies in the simulation results.
4) 1pts. Analyse the linearity of the amplifier by plotting 1dB compression point
5) Bonus: 1 pts. If you plot and calculate IIP3 power (PIIP3).

Two most common oscillator schematics are shown above. Note that you can also place
the Colpitts and Hartley band selection networks between the base and emitter or
between the collector and the emitter of the transistor. See lecture notes.

You will simulate an oscillator by using of one of these two types that can oscillate from
100 MHz to 400 MHz. The circuit should also be able to produce an output signal
ranging from 100 mV to 1 V peak voltage at 100 MHz. Report the followings:

a) 1 pts. A plot showing the output frequencies vs. the values of the variable component.
b) 1 pts. Plot the output peak voltages vs. the current I E at 100 MHz.
c) 1 pts. Following the part–(b), plot power consumption vs. the current IE
d) 1 pts. Plot the output spectrum at 100 MHz. Report the phase noise at 500 kHz.
e) 1 pts. Design a circuit to generate a differential signal at the output.
f) 1 pts. Show your analytic calculations in your report.
g) Bonus: 1pts. If you modify the circuit to generate an FM modulated signal at the output.

Note: You need to make one of capacitors and one resistor in the biasing circuit variable to obtain
results for some parts of the question above. Also note that the above circuits are examples. Any
configuration from the relevant lecture is fine.

Submission:
Submit your report, before 4:30 pm, April 15. Also attach (or submit separately)
your circuit schematic.
