FUEL CELL

A fuel is an electrochemical cell that converts the chemical

energy of a fuel and an oxidizing agent into electricity through a pair
redox reaction.

And a fuel is converted directly into electricity direct current by an

electrochemical reaction without resorting to a burning process, rather

than to heat by a combustion reaction.Fuel cells work like batteries, but

they do not run down or need recharge they produce electricity and heat
as long fuel supplied.

Alternative fuels can be used to power a fuel cell such as hydrogen,

methane, methanol, ethanol, and landfill gas, which can be produced
from renewable energy sources such as biomass.
Methanol - Oxygen fuel cell

Methanol oxygen fuel cell or Direct methnol

fuel cells(DMFC)s are a subcategory of proton-
exchange fuel cells in which methanol is used
as the fuel.Their main advantage is the ease of transport of methanol, an
energy-dense yet reasonably stable liquid at all environmental
conditions. DMFCs are also environmental friendly.

Direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) is considered as a highly promising

power source. It is based on polymer electrolytes membrane (PEM) fuel
cell technology. It poses a number of advantages such as a liquid fuel,
quick refueling, low cost of methanol and the compact cell, design
making it suitable for various potential applications including stationary
and portable applications.

 In the DMFC,the anode catalyst itself draws the hydrogen from the
liquid methanol, eliminating the need for a fuel reformer.

 Efficiencies of about 40%.

 This is operated at a temperature between 120-190°F.

Construction :

Anode : Consists of Nickel sheet which porous and

Platinum or Palladium is deposed into the pores, which acts
as catalyst.

Cathode : Consists of porous Nickel sheet in which silver is

deposited into the pores and acts as catalyst.

Electrolyte : Sulphuric acid

Working :
At anode methanol undergoes oxidation to produce carbon dioxide.

3 + 2 → 2 + 6+ + 6−

At cathode oxygen is reduced in presence of hydrogen ions to form a

water molecule.

Net cell reaction :

In this fuel cell, KOH is not used as the electrolyte, because it reacts with
CO2 and gets converted into ions. This decreases the efficiency of
the fuel cells.

 Applications :
 Fuel cells can be used in a wide range of applications, including
transportation,

 material handling and stationary,

 portable, and emergency backup power.

 Hydrogen can be used in fuel cells to generate power using a

chemical reaction rather than combustion, producing only water and
heat as byproducts.

 Current DMFCs are limited in the power they can produce, but can
still store a high energy content in a small space. This means they can
produce a small amount of power over a long period of time.

 consumer goods such as mobile phones, digital cameras or laptops.

 Military applications of DMFCs are an emerging application since

they have low noise and thermal signatures and no toxic effluent.
These applications include power for man-portable tactical
equipment, battery chargers, and autonomous power for test and
training instrumentation.

 Units are available with power outputs between 25 watts and 5

kilowatts with durations up to 100 hours between refuelings.
