1. Abacus was invented by the Chinese 5000 years ago.
2. Step Reckoner was invented by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.
3. The Second-Generation computer used Transistors.
4. Fourth Generation could be placed on an office table.
C. Write ‘T’ for true and ‘F’ for false statements.

1. First calculating device - ABACUS
2. First mechanical calculator - PASCALINE
3. First electro mechanical calculator - Mark-1
4. First electronic computer - ENIAC
5. First PC - ALTAIR
E. Answer the following questions.
1. How did people calculate or count in the olden times?
People started calculating and counting with pebbles, stones, sticks and bones. They also use
fingers and toes to count.
2. Write a short note on Abacus?
An Abacus is a wooden frame with beads on parallel wires which can do simple calculations
like addition and subtraction.
3. Write short notes on MARK-1 and ENIAC.
Mark-1:

• It is the first Electro-Mechanical computer built by Prof Howard Aiken in 1944.

• It was 51 feet long, weighed 5 tons and used punched cards and a type writer for input
and output.
ENIVAC:

• It is the first electronic general-purpose digital computer built by John Mauchly and
Presper Eckert.
• It contained over 20,000 vacuum tubes and was 1000 times faster than Mark-1.It
weighed almost 27,000 kg.
• It could perform 5000 additions per second.
4. List the features of Analytical Engine.

• It was the first ever working model of the mechanical computer.

• It was fully program-controlled machine, it had two main parts ’Store’ and ‘Mill’.
• The Store was the sections where numbers were held. Mill was where the numbers
were calculated to give results.
5. What is Artificial Intelligence? Explain giving examples.
Researchers are focused on developing thinking computers or smart phones. This is known
as Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Examples: Siri, Alexa, Cortana and Google.
