Personal And Interpersonal Communication Skills

The difference between personal and interpersonal skills is quite explicit. Humans
have evolved with unique abilities compared with other life forms in the world. They are
able to use tools, communicate, learn, analyze and synthesize. We can term such abilities as
personal skills which are important to succeed in life. Without such advanced personal skills
we, humans are same as other living creatures. In the job market, employers decide the
suitable candidate for a posting, based on the candidate skills in completing the described
task effectively. Generally, people specialize in certain skills. For example, Michael
Schumacher had good mechanical skills and was well suited for racing sports. Such
specialized skills are generally acquired by birth or developed through experience, training,
and learning. They require continuous effort to be sustainable. Communication and ability
to interact creates a sub-sector in personal skills named interpersonal skills. Interpersonal
skill is part of the personal skills and a vital skill in carrying out the duties in business or
employment. The key difference between personal and interpersonal skills is that personal
skills are the abilities an individual possess which are considered to be his/her
strengths while interpersonal skills are the set of abilities needed by a person to positively
and effectively communicate with others. Below we will detail each skill under respective
topics.

Formal versus informal speaking


Just like in your own language, the way you speak depends on who you are speaking to or
with. Informal speaking situations include speaking with close friends, family workers and
probably co-workers. Slang, idiom and relaxed pronunciation are more common in these
situations. Small talk becomes less necessary when you are speaking with friends, but is
considered polite in an informal situation with acquaintances. Sometimes your pace and
volume shifts when you feel more comfortable. Formal situations require a different kind of
language. Your speaking may even be rehearsed in some situations. You may feel nervous
about saying everything properly. You must also consider manners and body language.
Personal Skills

1. Listening Skills:- Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret


messages in the communication process. Listening is key to all effective
communication. Without the ability to listen effectively, messages are easily
misunderstood. As a result, communication breaks down and the sender of the
message can easily become frustrated or irritated. If there is one communication skill
you should aim to master, then listening is it.
2. Speaking Skills: - Speaking skills are defined as the skills which allow us to
communicate effectively. They give us the ability to convey information verbally and
in a way that the listener can understand. Speaking is an interactive process where
information is shared, and if necessary, acted upon by the listener. So, it’s important
to develop both speaking and listening skills in order to communicate effectively.
3. Reading Skills:- Reading skill is the ability to decode meaning from a text.
The skills include phonics, word recognition, vocabulary, decoding and
fluency. For one to be a proficient reader, one has to possess these vital skills.
Hence, the need to help learners acquire reading skills. Reading skills are the
skills acquired through reading, such as comprehension, fluency, and
independence. These skills give people the ability to give clear meaning to the
turn words on a page. These skills are important because we read something
in some form every day. It is an integral part of modern life.

4. Writing Skills:- Writing skills include all the knowledge and abilities related to
expressing ideas through the written word. The ability to clearly communicate ideas
through writing is in high demand for employers in any industry. Well-written
documents, emails and posts can persuade customers to purchase a product or
convince investors to partner with a company.

Interpersonal communication Skills


1. Presentation Skills:- Presentation skills can be defined as a set of abilities that
enable an individual to: interact with the audience; transmit the messages with clarity;
engage the audience in the presentation; and interpret and understand the mindsets
of the listeners. These skills refine the way you put forward your messages and
enhance your persuasive powers.
2. Interview Skills:- An interview is a structured conversation where one
participant asks questions, and the other provides answers. [1] In common
parlance, the word "interview" refers to a one-on-one conversation between
an interviewer and an interviewee. The interviewer asks questions to which
the interviewee responds, usually providing information. That information may
be used or provided to other audiences immediately or later.
3. Application Writing:- Application Letter is a letter written for a variety of
purposes in our day to day activities which can be domestic or professional. It is a
liability conferred upon the sender by an authority. In such a liability the sender is
expected to explain, inform/pre-inform the authoritative receiver about particular
ongoing/upcoming activities, events, process or procedures. It is also a written request
when written for assistance, admission, employment, favour, information, permission,
service etc. A letter of application is also an accompanying document as and when
required. When it does so it is known as Cover Letter. An application letter is largely
a formal type of letter as it follows a predefined format which is applicable to most
type of application letters.
4. Letter Writing:- A letter is a written message that can be handwritten or printed on
paper. It is usually sent to the recipient via mail or post in an envelope, although this is
not a requirement as such. Any such message that is transferred via post is a letter, a
written conversation between two parties.
5. CV Writing:- A curriculum vitae, often abbreviated as CV, is a document that job
applicants use to showcase their academic and professional accomplishments. It is used to
apply for positions within areas where a person’s specific knowledge or expertise is required.
A curriculum vitae is usually longer than a resume and must include the information that the
recruiter needs to verify the skills, experience, and educational qualifications of an applicant.
6. Report Writing:- Report writing is a formal style of writing elaborately on a topic.
The tone of a report is always formal. The audience it is meant for is always thought out
section. For example – report writing about a school event, report writing about a
business case, etc.
7. Essay Writing:- The essay is a written piece that is designed to present an
idea, propose an argument, express the emotion or initiate debate. It is a tool
that is used to present writer’s ideas in a non-fictional way. Multiple
applications of this type of writing go way beyond, providing political
manifestos and art criticism as well as personal observations and reflections
of the author.

8. Proposal writing:- Proposal writing is the act of creating a written pitch on a given
subject. Good proposal writing requires a lot of forethought, understanding of your
audience, and creative writing to persuade the reader. Remember when you had to write a
persuasive essay in school? A proposal is a more advanced version, often with the goal of
securing a contract or project.
