CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background information
As urbanization continues to accelerate, cities around the world are experiencing significant
challenges related to parking management. The rapid increase in vehicle ownership, coupled
with limited parking spaces, has led to heightened traffic congestion, increased pollution, and
frustration among drivers. In many metropolitan areas, finding a parking spot can be a time-
consuming and stressful task, contributing to wasted fuel and time, which has adverse effects on
both the environment and the economy.
Traditional parking systems, often reliant on manual operations and outdated technologies,
struggle to adapt to the dynamic needs of modern urban environments. These systems frequently
lack real-time information, resulting in inefficiencies that exacerbate parking woes. Drivers often
circle around searching for available spaces, leading to congestion, longer travel times, and
increased emissions.
In response to these challenges, there has been a growing interest in implementing smart parking
solutions that leverage advanced technologies, particularly the Internet of Things (IoT), to
optimize parking space usage. A Smart Parking System utilizes a network of IoT sensors, mobile
