Assignment #7
1. Find the features of the VLC program described on their web site. Describe what the program
is used for, what is fast hardware decoding, and list two video formats, and list three audio
formats.
o The VideoLAN project created the open-source, free multimedia player known as VLC
Media Player. Numerous multimedia forms, including as music, video, and streaming
protocols, are supported.
o Uses of VLC media player:
 requires no additional codecs to play the majority of multimedia files
 Media is streamed over networks.
 Multimedia files can be converted between many formats.
 supports customizing and synchronizing subtitles.

o Fast Hardware Decoding:

 The GPU of a device can be used to decode video with VLC Media Player's
hardware acceleration capabilities. This enhances playback performance and
lowers CPU utilization, especially for high-resolution videos.

3. Convert each example using the VLC feature (File  Convert) to the following formats:
o .mp3

o .ogg

o .m4v (MAC) or MP4 (PC)

.wav .map3 .ogg .m4v

Example 1 1.1 MB 536 KB 326 KB 535 KB
Example 2 2.1 MB 537 KB 509 KB 535 KB
Example 3 5.2 MB 473 KB 485 KB 473 KB
Example 4 10.4 MB 473 KB 961 KB 941 KB

 Describe your findings.

 In comparison to their converted versions, the.wav files are substantially
larger.
 The biggest reduction is seen in Example 3, which goes from 5.2 MB (.wav) to
just 473 KB (.mp3), or around 90% less.

Compared to the original.wav files, the.mp3 files are significantly smaller.

Although.ogg files are normally significantly smaller than.wav files, they are
slightly larger than.mp3 files.
 Although there is less of a difference between.mp3 and.ogg in Examples 2 and
3, both formats are still much smaller than.wav.
 Regardless of the size of the original.wav file, the.m4v files are all roughly the
same size (~535 KB).
PART B: Digital Graphics Using GIMP software (30 marks)
1. List and describe the five features of the GIMP program found on their web site.
 Layers and Masks: GIMP's layer feature enables you to work on specific aspects of an
image without changing other aspects.
 Advanced Image Retouching Tools: For intricate adjustments, this set of tools includes
perspective transform, clone stamp, and healing.
 Brushes and Painting Supplies: Creative drawing and design are made possible by
customizable brushes and paint supplies.
 Support for Many File Formats: JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, and GIF are just a few of the
many file formats that GIMP can handle.
 Filters and Effects: Provides pre-installed filters for image enhancement, including
artistic effects, noise reduction, blur, and sharpening.
2. List, describe, and state the use of the following file formats:
 .bmp
 Simple, uncompressed picture format. useful for keeping pictures in good quality
while saving them, however it frequently leads to big file sizes.
 .gif
 Frequently employed for graphics with a restricted colour palette and basic
movements. Best suited for icons and logos.
 .jpg
 A compressed format where file sizes are decreased at the expense of some image
quality. Perfect when file size is an issue with photos or site images.
 .png
 A transparent, lossless format. Excellent for images that need a lot of detail, such
transparent-backed logos and designs.
 .tiff
 Professional and medical imaging frequently uses this versatile format for high-
quality images. Both compression and uncompression are possible.
3. Find an image on your computer that has been taken with your smartphone.
 I took a picture from my phone and moved it to a folder so I could work with it. It was a
2.5 MB file at first.
 I saved it as a.xcf file after opening the picture in GIMP. Layers and masks were saved in
the native format, which resulted in an increase in file size to 4.3 MB.

4. Now save the GIMP file in the following formats using Export As ->+Select File Type.
 bmp
 .gif
 .jpg
 .png
 .tiff

File Format File Size

.bmp 5.0 MP
.gif 1.1 MP
.jpg 0.8 MP
.png 1.2 MP
.tiff 4.7 MP

5. Note the different file sizes.

 The maximum compression was attained with JPG, which reduced the file size to 600 KB
without sacrificing usable quality.
 Even after decreasing its bit depth, the PNG file size remained comparatively big since
PNG employs lossless compression and works well for pictures that need to be
transparent or of high quality.
 When the number of colours was reduced from 256 to 128 instead, GIF compressed
effectively, although there was some slight colour banding.
 Due to its uncompressed format, BMP maintained its size while decreasing colour depth.
 Although TIFF's size decreased as a result of LZW compression, its high-quality lossless
nature allowed it to stay quite large.
