1 Simplifying Radical Expressions

• Radical expression is an expression that contains radical.

Radical Expression Parts:

√ Radicand. In √3 16 , 3 is index and 16 is radicand. To simplify any radical expression, understanding what value
index

of index do to the expression is important.

In general, If √
a a
√ 3
b and b=c a , then √a b= c a=c . For example, √3 16= 23 ∙2 2=2 √3 4. √
Adding and Subtracting Radicals: Product Property of Radicals:
Radical expressions with same radicand and Different radicands can be multiplied if it has same index of the radical.
index can be added or subtracted.
√c a ∙ √c b=√c ab ∴ √3 2∙ √3 4=√3 8=√23 =2
3

√b a+ √b a=2 √b a ∴ √2+ √ 2=2 √ 2 Quotient Property of Radicals:

Different radicands can be divided if it has same index of the radical.

√ √
√c a = c a ∴ √2 8 = 2 8 = 2 4= 2 22=2
√c b b √2 2 2
√ √

2 Solving Radical Equations

• In any radical equation, cancel out the radical by its inverse operation then apply general order of operations to solve
and equations. To cancel out square root equation, square the entire equation, to cancel out cube root equation, cube
the entire equation and so on.
Solving Square Root Equation: Solving Cube Root Equation:
Solve √ x−1=2 x +1 Solve √
3
x−1=2
2
Step 1: ( √ x−1=2 x +1 ) Step 1: ( √
3
x−1=2 )
3

Step 2: x−1=4 x 2 +4 x +1 Step 2: x−1=8

Step 3: 4 x 2+3 x +2=0 and solve for x Step 3: Solve for x . x=9

3 Analyzing/Graphing/Translating Square Root Functions

y= √ x +2
y= √ x
y= √ x y= √ x +2 y= √ x−2
y= √ x y= √ x−2
