SAT MATH - Exponential Function

The document explains the concept of exponential functions, highlighting their general form and characteristics, including growth and decay. It compares exponential functions to linear functions, noting that exponential functions grow and decay at varying rates, while linear functions do so at a constant rate. Additionally, it provides models for exponential growth and decay based on a constant percentage change over time.

1 Exponential Function

• Exponential equation/function is when equation/function has independent variable that appears to be an exponent.
• Most basic exponential function is y=2x .
• Domain of an exponential function is all real numbers and the range is set of all positive if a> 0, and all negative if a< 0,

General Form: Example:

x x
f (x)=a ( b ) , a is constant, b is base of function, f ( x )=3 ( 2 )
and x is independent variable
This function has initial value/ y -intercept at 3/(0 , 3)
Constant, a , displays initial value/ y -intercept, the
function contains (0 , a) Base of the function is 2 and it means from the initial
value, it is doubled because the growth factor is 2
Base of function, b , displays growth or decay
factor, how fast function grows or decays
3 , 6 , 12, 24 …
≫ The term factor uses multiplication operation≪
2 Exponential Growth, Exponential Decay, and Models

x
y=2
f (x)=a ( b )
x

If a> 0 and b> 1, the function a ( b )x is exponential growth

If a> 0 and 0< b<1, the function a ( b )x is exponential decay

constant percent increase over specific time period constant percent increase over specific time period
t t
A ( t )=P ( 1+ r ) A ( t )=P ( 1−r )
A ( t ) is the amount respect to time t of the model A ( t ) is the amount respect to time t of the model
P is the initial amount P is the initial amount
r is the percent of increase per time period r is the percent of decrease per time period
t is the period of time t is the period of time
3 Comparing Linear Function and Exponential Function

• Exponential function grows more and more rapidly whereas linear function grows in constant manner.
• Exponential function decays less and less whereas linear function decays in constant manner.
